Will JVG ever produce a Mavs/Spurs type of offense-defense?

I know JVG is defensive minded, but scoring 85-95 points a game ain't going to cut it in the current NBA.

Not a Mavs style but we do play the Spurs style almost exactly.

How 'bout lets just play Rocket ball. When Yao and Mcgrady are healthy we don't need to imitate anybody. Basically you are asking, can the Rockets play consistently winning basketball and the answere is yes when Yao and Tracy are healthy which they have been for one whole year together, yes we can. And the the only imitatiing that needs to be going on is the rocket power dancers imitating the miami heat dancers in smokin' humdingerness and then the whole franchise and it's fans are in heaven and who gives a damn about the future we'd have lived fully satisfied lives.

The record shows he's consistently coached very good defensive teams, and usually very poor offensive teams:

Although you'll notice his best offensive team was our squad from last year that started the season like crap only to improve a lot once we started to get rolling. I wouldn't be surprised if we were a top 10 team offensively in the second half of the season.

Unlike any other team we are builing our team around a 7'6'' giant, who can play an inside and outside game. Although after the last season our team should have much more talent, with players that can put the ball in the basket, when called upon to do so. We are limited to only playing up tempo traditional inside/outside basketball. This is not to say that we can't be as good as the teams mentioned, infact we might even be better!
JVG need to have a desire not only to win with defence, but when the opportunity arises win by scoring the most points as being our priority.
Durvasa's graph indicates the need for a co-Head Coach in charge of Offence!

Van gundy never had an offensive weapon Like Tmac. And if you recall T Mac had a chat with him after which he was allowed more freedom.

Van Dummy and offense is an oxymoron.

In fact, Van Dummy is a moron.

Looking at the bar graph, the best offensive team he had were the 04-05 rockets. That team had a lot of scorers, but I think the team coming into the 05-06 season had better offensive players. If the season hadnt have gone the way it did with the injuries and the breakup of Anderson, we might've been a team like the Mavs or even couldve beaten them. We were one playoff win from winning against the Mavs last year, and the Mavs didnt do much during the 2005 offseason. We couldve been a better team.

Looking to the future, it'll depend on the kind of players that JVG gets. He seeks for defense in the players that he wants on his team, but will the defensive players also bring good atheleticism and offensive skills?

JVG was a great offensive coach in 2004-2005. It's all about the guys we have. If we have a good offseason, I expect us to play like we did that year, with a healthy Yao and Tracy.

The mavs are no where near the team we almost beat in 2005. The difference is Avery Johnson. We would have gotten killed by this Dallas team because they play defense now also.

Seems to be working fine in the finals

If we infuse some talented role players around our two guys then sure it is possible.

Thanks, that was really profound. I guess Tom Thibodeau is a poo-poo face?

I'm glad there are posters in this thread who are able to look past the stats and see that, when were were healthy and everything was clicking (2nd half of 2005) we were a better than average offensive team. When your 2 best scorers are out for the better part of the season, OF COURSE you're not going to average 100 ppg. That's 45 ppg sitting on the bench.

When you have the best low post scorer in the game on your team, you're not going to install the Phoenix Suns offense. You're going to adjust your game plan to the type of players you have on your team.

It's about three 3pt shooting people. The 04/05 squad had excellent shooters in the backcourt besides Sura. And at 35% even he wasn't bad. Right now we're feeling like denver did in that clippers series. Yao is triple teamed and we can't make a shot. Tmac finds a wide open shooter and we can't buy a shot. We'll look so much better once we replace the guards of last year with shooter. Offensively, at least.
