it seems that one more major incident will tip the balance and send iraq spiraling into a bloody civil war. i was hoping to read some thoughtful posts on why or why not this may happen.

Iraqi leaders sidestep all-out civil war

After a weekend of sleepless nights, emergency meetings, and an unprecedented three-day curfew, Iraq has managed to stave off its worst fear after last week\\\'s destruction of a major Shiite shrine: That the country\\\'s small-scale civil conflict was about to bloom into a bloody and wide-ranging war between its sects.

But disturbing signs are emerging that Iraq\\\'s sectarian powder-keg is still highly volatile.

I'm not sure all-out civil war would be possible with the US army in there. How would the dynamics of a 3-way war work, anyway?

Shiites and Sunnis both fight US and each other in open warfare? I don't see it. This is why I'm not in favor of the army leaving yet.

Now, continued guerilla type stuff, bombings, etc... sure, that will definitely keep happening.

i think i know what you are getting at here and personally i don't feel that iraq is in civil war now. my thinking is a massive full scale war between the two factions.

what would the u.s. do if this happened?

probably arm both sides and play them off each other.

its in the bush administration and their corporate overlords interests to have civil war and instability in iraq. that way we never have to leave and all of dubyas buddies can continue with the war profiteering.

I am sure W shares your definition, unless the above comes to pass (and then he would change his definition to include blue and grey uniforms).

I am not sure what the average Iraqi thinks. Regional militias are running around exacting political vendettas. Criminals are kidnapping and ransoming wealthy Iraqis. Heavily armed and scared sh*tless GIs are maining checkpoints. Foreign Muslims fundies are packing explosives in public areas. And domestic insurgents are also creating havoc with plastique. A *civil* war may be a walk in the park compared to this.
