I'm new to the WiFi scene and have a question. When I click on the list of wifi networks available near my house a few pop up. They all have "locks" on them except mine. Is that because it is mine, therefor a "lock" logo wouldn't show up? I just want to make sure I'm secure as possible.

It means you do not have any security protocols in place Like WEP ( Which is pretty much how 90% of home wi-fi users set it up ) Now the only other condition where you do have security but do not display the Lock is that you have MAC filtering enabled ( This is how I set mine up ) I use Mac Filtering but it looks like to everyone that you can access my Wireless network but you really can't.

    Hope that helps...

Did you actually lock yours before and it's just not showing that you are? or you absolutely haven't?

If I'm not mistaken, there was a thread earlier this year about how to lock your connection. I'll see if I can dig it up.

You need to enable your security on your Wi-fi and then create a password that you will have to put into all the computers you are using...don't worry, once you input it, they will remember it.

Right now you are like Starbucks, you have an open system...people could come up to your curb and access your network without any problems whatsoever.

At the very least, I would look into mac filtering. It's like an invitation list and each computer has a unique mac address.

Otherwise, anyone can check out the unprotected files you're sharing on your network.

You can provide community service by providing free internet access to your neighbors.

Seriously, you should not even broadcast your signal to the public. If people can see you, they can break it if they know how.
