I'm not a regular poster but do read posts here everyday and also listen to local radio about my Beloved Rockets. I have one question for everyone. Why do I keep hearing people calling in saying Yao is 7'6 so he should get 200 rebounds a game? explain to me that logic please. Base on that logic, a dwarf should be the out run usain bolt with 1 leg? where do people come up with such logic? just because you weight 300 lbs doesnt mean u can bench press 800lbs. He is taller than everyone in the league but he is also slower than 95% of players in the league. Why can't people understand the fact that rebounds come from being quick and fast instead of tall? I'm no rocket scientist but 5 yrs old should understand that.
Rebounds come from being athletic and just plain hustle. Lemme put it this way... give his height and length to Chuck Hayes and Chuck would avg 18rpg EASY
I agree with that somewhat but being 7'6 you have to be slower than most. Chuck hayes would not be able to move like the way he move now if he's 7'6. That's just plain and simple.
Because thats what people would like to see. They want Yao to be Shaq and manhandle everyone because on paper there about the same size. Then we doesn't get 200 rebounds a game they want to bash him as soft and effortless. When in reality deep down they love the guy and just can't stand him to not grab 200 rebounds a game. So they vent themselves here.
Actually athletic and hustle are not the primary factors for rebounds. What really matter is boxing out your opponent which Yao is pretty darn good at. Although he can box out his defender but he's often too slow to react to the open rebounds therefore he relies on his teammates to get the rebounds while he's boxing out. That's the reason why Scolandry have some really consistent number on the rebounds. I bet if Yao is restricted from the paint area Scolandry's RBS will get down to at least 2/3 of what it is right now.
well it ain't just clutchfans.net. I hear idiots called into local station all the time claiming that Yao is clumsy, soft, horrible, or biggest burst of all time. He should be averaging 20 boards and 50 lbs a game.
If Chuck has the vertical of landry and Yao's height, he will be the best basketball center in nba history surpassing Wilt Cham and all the other great centers. Honestly i don't really think u need good hands to simply dunk on anyone.
So true I agree man. Being unrealistic and hating is just a byproduct of impatience of loser fans who have nothing better to do.
I would have agreed with this 10-20 years ago, but not now. There is really no point to boxing out anymore because of #1 the long rebound created by all the 3-point shots usually goes right over your head if you're boxing out, and #2 teams putting more emphasis on getting back on defense than getting offensive rebounds. How many times have you seen the offensive team already running back on defense before anyone even grabs a rebound? Really, rebounding is just about being in the right place at the right time nowadays. Just whoever is standing there when the ball happens to bounce right to them. Rebounding is a lost art. The lack of fundamental rebounding skills is one thing I really hate about today’s NBA game.
The biggest misconception is that guys that are 7'6 should dominate. I always wondered why? Especially when guys that tall before Yao were nothing more than just stiffs (except Prime Sabonis). And if they weren't stiffs, they weren't nearly as skilled as Yao has been.
He loses 3 or 4 boards a game because his hands are so bad (he also loses a couple of passes each game for the same reason) At least he tries...
While I agree that Yao is limited by his size in certain ways, I think you need to thoroughly piss him off to get the best out of him. Certain games of the season, the guy just flat out shows up and dominates. Everytime he faces Shaq, rebounding becomes a non-issue. Also, his last game against the Celtics, the man clearly had something to prove and he produced in a big way. Pissed off Yao Ming = true potential
