As Rudy T puts it in today's Chronicle: "To me, basketball is a sport that has the most freedom and the biggest chance of chaos. But when they get it together and it works, there is nothing like it. It's like jazz musicians coming together and making something beautiful." Now imagine that happening with 22 guys on a surface bigger than a football field.
And you be suprised how many concepts you would recognize from American sports (not that they were necessarily INVENTED by American sports, but...) like the give and go, the post up, the bomb (route one I think they call it), the no look etc...
"the most freedom and the biggest chance of chaos" That, my friend, would be a perfect description of the knuckleball.
Soccer could be improved by doubling the width of the goal and adding a second goalie. Teamwork baby! And scoring.
Soccer and basketball share many things, the give and go, the pick and roll, the fluidity of movement. Soccer is about getting the ball to open space...as is basketball. They are both great to watch. DD
You should watch soccer because the players and owners aren't b****ing about money and they won't go on strike on August 30th!
Don't forget "Ultimate Fireball" - now that is a hot sport. I always thought American Gladiators was a tough sport...
What was the event on American Gladiators that had them shooting the tennis balls?...that was cool, I want to play that.
Soccer rocks. Can't wait till the Champion's League starts.. And actually, the rather low amount of scoring possibilities just adds to the suspense when watching, IMO.
Well, that may be true as far as MLS is concerned, but you just gotta watch a few parts of the "Ronaldo needs to leave Inter Milan to find his happiness (and a wage raise) again" drama to realize that soccer isn't exclusively played by politically correct intelligent idealists with a healthy attitude...
Why you should PLAY soccer: Groupies! http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/waiwai/0208/020819becks.html "My life changed with the World Cup," says Taeko, a 30-year-old former office worker, self-confessed Bekkammer and one-time rock groupie. "Where I once had eyes only for the band I liked, now I can only see Beckham. I went and stayed at the hotel where he stayed while he was in Japan. I examined the toilet he's supposed to have used from top to bottom. I took loads of photos of it. Then I licked the toilet thoroughly. I can't wait to get to Britain." Now THAT'S a dedicated fan...or freak. You be the judge.
That is very unlikely at best. Best bets would be Real Madrid (especially if the get Ronaldo) and Bayern Munich (now that they robbed last season's finalist Leverkusen).
Have a look at Rugby League (This is not boring old rugby, its a different sport that has kept its old name) at http://www.nrl.com.au There is not a tougher main stream sport I can think of. Its exciting, it has the right balance of attack and defence. State Of Origin Rugby League....its like a war between NSW and Queensland. THAT is a sport more people should have a look at!
And you should all join Heath's Championship Manager soccer sim league. Join up in the fantasy forum. You don't have to have the game to be in it. Its loads of fun. Marcus Benson has single-handedly made soccer interesting for me.
