Why would the Lakers have Homecourt against us if we win out?

ESPN is reporting a victory over visiting Sacramento on Tuesday night in the regular-season finale would put the Lakers in position to be the top seed, giving them homecourt advantage in the first three rounds of the playoffs.

If we win all three and the Hornets lose to Dallas, why wouldn't we have homecourt against the Lakers? Just wondering, I know it's all hypothetical.

ABC was wrong apparently. if we win out we'll secure the #1 spot because we hold the tiebreaker. also, can someone calrify if NO wins out they'll take the #1 spot?

I have, and based on those threads we would have homecourt. That is why I'm starting a new thread, is it a mistake by ESPN?

No because the Lakers hold the tiebreaker if they win out against New Orleans. If all three of us win out, New Orleans wins the division and we are the number 3 seed. If NO faces the Lakers, they would not have homecourt and if we do I'm not sure. But I think we would.

    ESPN is wrong.

Scenerio 1: Lakers/Rockets/Hornets win out: Rockets would be first because in that scenerio its the team with the best winning percentage of the teams tied. Rockets are 2-2 vs Hornets and 2-1 vs Lakers so it would be ours.

Scenerio 2: Lakers/rockets win out: Rockets would be first since we are 2-1 vs. LAkers

Scenerio 3: Rockets/Hornets win out: Hornets would be first since we are tied and they have the better divison record.

So actually its preferable if the LAkers win out really since that would make scenerio 3 impossible.

OK, I just remembered...we would win in a 3-way tiebreaker with LA and the Hornets. However, if LAL loses vs. Sacramento and Houston and Hornets are tied, Rockets would lose the division tiebreaker, thereby giving the WC to N.O.

if we win out, we would have a higher seed than the lakers, so no, they wouldn't have homecourt.

If the Lakers, Hornets, and Rockets all tied at the end, I believe there is a three-way tiebreak format different than the two team tiebreak, and I think it puts us at the number one seed. I think it combines head-to-heads together, so we would be 5-3 (2 wins vs NO and 2 vs LAL) which is better than the other two if I remember correctly. I'm sure someone could do a better job explaining this, though. :)

so if we want any team to win out besides us, it would be the Lakers. what about the Spurs? what if they win out?

the best analysis of the seedings i've heard all day, completely correct.

anybody else notice that the graphics would flash on the screen and highlight all four top seed contending teams and on abc and espn they just ignored the rockets even after they were shown as the 3 seed.

No, if we take care of business tonight, we would be one game ahead of the spurs. If we lose, it would be between us and the spurs for the 3rd seed (assuming NO and LA win out), and they would get it by virtue of a better division record. This would put us at 5th.

Yes. After the game on ESPN they went to Jon Barry and asked him "It's down to LA, New Orleans, and San Antonio for the #1 seed. Who will get it?" and I'm like WTF? What about Houston?

Bunch of biased Morans at ABC/ESBN need to get a brain.

Haha ESPN just made a correction:

As if the Rockets are some kind of afterthought, pathetic.
