If Paul Silas signs with Cleveland, and Brown signs with Detroit, and Doc Rivers sticks with Orlando, then we will be left with two big names. Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Dunleavy. Jeff Van Gundy is a perfectionist and likes to analyze and is kinda smart. But he also quit on his team. I guess he would be all right for our team. I still like Rick Carlisle..but the Rockets aren't pursuing him...but of course...the Rockets like to take their time... So what are the negatives of Jeff Van Gundy? No Bashing!
He had trouble incorporating an aging Ewing into the run and gun offense of Sprewell and Houston. I haven't heard of anyone (media, former players) say anything bad about Van Gundy. All I keep on hearing is how much the players respected him.
The problem with the Knicks was that they committed a lot of money to Tier 2 type players. They had little chance of improving based on that. JVG probably had very little say on those decisions. If he did, then he is not very smart.
Big negative is a perceived lack of offensive knowledge, due to the ugly style of ball his Knicks played. Whether this is true or not, I don't have any objections to winning with defense.
i don't see Van Gundy leaving another team after 19 games into the season. That was a 1 time deal. He coached in New York, there is only so much he could take. That is the one negative about him that shouldn't even be talked about. everything else is fair game
I'm just not sold on his offensive abilities. I mean, it's one thing to design a system that drags everyone else down with you because you're hogtied with crappy players. He did make the most of what he had there. But.. What he would have here (talent-wise) is much better, and I wonder if maybe he wouldn't try the same "ugly" approach, thereby wasting the gifts of Yao and Steve. It seems like his system from the Knicks is not designed to take advantage of highly skilled atheletes, especially on the offensive end. I guess I'm just worried that he might try to force his system onto our players, rather than adapting. I have no basis for this, it's just a gut feeling/fear. Whereas Larry Brown has shown that he can adapt. No use crying over spilled milk though. Are there any other candidates who have had success with multiple different types of systems?
Just doesn't seem like teams are interested in Van Gundy any more. He used to be THE coach that all the teams wanted. Then the Sixers say they don't want him. The Cavs say they don't want him. The Rockets apparently were not wowed by his interview. I haven't really read anything about any other teams being interested in Van Gundy. I get the feeling teams are starting to realize maybe he isn't the great coach that they were hyping him up to be.
which means he'll probably end up here. what a match, the Rockets were the "most attractive" team, but got dissed. Gumby was "the best available" coach, and got dissed. whoever made the comparison to the platonic friend prom date in the other thread, it looks to be right on.
THIS IS THE REASON HE WANTS MORE INFLUENCE IN THE PERSONEL DICISIONS. THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN HAVING TO PAY FOR OTHER PEOPLES MISTAKES. I THINK HE DID A GREAT JOB WITH WHAT HE HAD. NOW WE WILL HAVE TO SEE IF CD WILL STEP ASIDE A LITTLE TO MAKE SOME ROOM FOR VAN GUNDY.
I think he was the choice in Cleveland but demanded too much money. So they turned around and offered it to silas.
