Is there a reason?!? He is only 42 years old. He was the Coach of the Year last year. He has been an assistant for three qualified and good coaches. The teams he has coached for have always made it to the postseason. He is a genius. His team was the best defensive team in the NBA. Although he is known for his defense...most coaches consider him as a master of offense. He's not the best coach ever. But who else is available?!? We should hire Rick Carlisle.
I agree. Time to get Carlisle!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - He won't quit on us in 3 years. - He won't get into petty fights with his star players in the media. - He was able to mold Jerry Stackhouse into a guy who played within the offensive scheme. - He won't sign with Detroit!
the thread title was a little misleading. To answer this though, according to "sources" as mentioned in other threads, Brown may still be available.. Personally, I doubt Dumars & Detroit would fire Carlisle unless they had a strong feeling that they could replace him with their top choice, so I think the alteration of the story to say that Brown is still thinking about it is just to defuse public backlash. so let's assume he's not available anymore. I'm with you, I like Carlisle. Even if Larry was still available, Carlisle might be a better choice, he's younger and might stick around longer. People say "look what Larry Brown did with AI as his only talent!" What did Carlisle have? and he beat Brown's sixers. Plus it really seems like Larry Brown is enjoying the role of the "belle of the ball" a little too much, which gives me concerns as to his deep-seeded character/convictions. Not the surface, "he's won with many teams, he said he wasn't interested in Washington out of respect for Collins" type PR crap, but what's underneath. That's what's most important in winning championships anyway. What's a guy like that going to do when it's gut-check time? Of course, all of this is based on reports from "sources", so take it with a grain of salt.
Totally agree. Joe Dumars fired Rick Carlisle just to get Larry Brown.....even though Rick Carlisle beat Larry Brown. They must have already made an agreement...because why would he fire Rick Carlisle? He was like their franchise future coach... Another thing is Rick Carlisle is a very humble and quiet guy. He doesn't like attention. He just does his job.
I admit...he wasn't that great of a player. But Phil Jackson averaged 6.7 points and 4.3 rebounds....what an impressive career as a player....well he doesn't have Shaq's respect! And Rick Adelman...7.7 points and 4 assists....IMPRESSIVE! He's not that respected... What does being a player have to do with coaching? Avery Johnson isn't impressive at all....do you think the players will respect him? Don't you know that the Detroit Pistons have a bunch of role players and Ben Wallace...and they were the best team in the East this season?? I don't remember any of his players criticizing him...publicly
I am on the Carlisle bandwagon. This is the best possible opportunity hire! But...to be fair.... The negatives you don't mention you can find on the Pistons board. Apparently - Carlisle and Wallace don't get along. Pistons mgmt was unhappy T. Prince and Okur didn't play much. Prince esp. - was given 5 games to prove himself - stunk. Pistons players supposedly hate the offense - too conservative. Big deal. This is the right guy. He'll have a chip on his shoulder after the axe. I think he'd kick ass. You know he can use Ming. You know he can use Francis. He's very tough and very smart. I'll take him and Jon Berry.
Hire rick Carlisle now - do not wait Les... You will miss out. This is a blessing that Dtroit wants Brown. This is a combination of youth and excellent backetball intellect. What an upgrade for this team. We had no idea Carlisle would be available when Rudy got run off...
This is the most important factor of all, what with all the complaints of our team, especially the guards, being selfish. If he can turn Stack into a team player, I have no doubts that he can influence Cat and Steve too. Stack went back to his old self when he got to Washington, so Carlisle is surely the reason for his one year aberration. The only thing that scares me about Carlisle is if he teaches our Rockets the same uglyball system he taught Detroit. I hope he doesn't because we definitely have more talent here, pound for pound, compared to the Pistons.
i was just being a smart-ass. regardless of whether or not he is the bob ueker of the nba, he is a great coach who obviously got his guys to listen. he is just one of many who is a better coach than player. his firing is dumber than silas'. great coaches who got raw deals.
"Ugly basketball" contributed to Houston's two titles and Detroit's appearance in the EC Finals. I'm less concerned about cosmetics and more about substance. Personally, I liked watching Barkley, or James Edwards, or Larry Bird, or Kevin McHale, or Robert Parrish, or Adrian Dantley, or Mark Aguirre pound the ball inside. Winning (and lower ticket prices) will correct the attendance problem. (Trading for Jason Williams wouldn't hurt, either.) University (Ugly Duckling) Blue
I thought Carlisle should have been considered one of the top candidates for Coach of the Year award again this year. They traded away their top scorer and still win the same number of games and got to the Conference finals. If you watched Detroit play, they sure didn't have a real go-to guy. But they played like a team and everybody knew his role. That's his positive, and also the very thing that worries me. He definitely can put the role players into their roles (the whole Pistons team consisted of role players). But can he put star players (we have two) into their roles too?
The Rox might not even have time to speak to Carlisle. Apparently he might be headed to Portland and Mocheecks headed to Philly. Carlisle could land in Portland By Rob Parker / The Detroit News Comment on this story Send this story to a friend Get Home Delivery AUBURN HILLS -- Rick Carlisle probably won't be without a job too long. Carlisle, fired by the Pistons on Saturday, could be signing on to coach the Portland Trail Blazers sometime this week. Carlisle's firing, after posting back-to-back 50-victory seasons in his first two years as a head coach, set off a chain reaction around the NBA. The Trail Blazers, who just this past week told the Philadelphia 76ers they wouldn't allow Coach Maurice Cheeks to interview there, have changed their minds. Cheeks, a former 76ers star and an assistant under Larry Brown, has given permission to talk to Philadelphia about Brown's old job. Brown will be introduced as the Pistons coach at a news conference as early as Monday. What sweetens the pot for Carlisle is the fact that the Trail Blazers are without a general manager. Bob Whitsitt resigned after this season. It's no secret that Carlisle, who was an NBA assistant for 11 seasons before coming to Detroit, would love a chance to both run an organization and coach it at the same time. "Maybe there's an opportunity with one of these jobs open that fits my particular profile," Carlisle said. "I don't know, but I guess I'll find out more about it the next seven days." Carlisle was an assistant for P.J. Carlesimo in Portland between 1994-97. The Trail Blazers went to the playoffs in each of those three seasons. Carlisle is known as a no- nonsense kind of leader. Many believe that's what that talented group of players need in Portland to get to the next step.
Interesting article. Funny how just a short while ago, we were on everyone's A-list and at the end, we are likely to get coached by Kenny Smith.
I sure hope CD knows what he’s doing with this patience strategy. If I were him I would be getting pretty anxious about now with the blazing speed that teams are finding new coaches. The Rockets competition is not just teams currently without head coaches like Toronto or Atlanta. It could be any team. Dallas or Sacramento could all of a sudden decide they want a change. Then they would be competing for the services of a coach the Rockets might want. The Pistons and Blazers news has just completely come out of left field.
I'll start off by saying Carlisle is a very good coach. But, he ain't perfect. He was the heir apparent to Larry Bird in Indiana. The top assistant. The clear choice for the job. But he was passed over. Why? Because he had trouble dealing with people. He became an announcer for a year and worked on his people skills. Got hired by Detroit and did great. But he was fired because he ticked off everyone in the organization. Carlisle has problems with people. Bottom line. It is tough to be around him. Winning is worth a lot, but 2 winning franchises decided it wasn't worth it. BTW, everyone remember a long time ago when an assistant coach got fined for tripping Sprewell during a game? Guess who that assistant coach was.
