Why was Bob Sura so good during his stint with the Rockets?

In an effort to get away from all the Francis threads, I thought I would change the mood here a bit and reflect on the good old days.

I unfortunately did not watch hardly any of the games when Bob Sura was playing. So I don't know what made the guy special. I only read and hears that he was a pretty good fit for the team during his stint.

My question is, what made him a better fit than say our current active point guards of James/Alston? Was it his defense? His leadership? His decision making? How would you compare his passing abilities with Alston? Same, better, worse. Would he have been the answer to our point guard problems now, if he was healthy and in the same form as he was before he got injured?
    Thanks

Mikes James is the closest player we have to Bob.

If Mike can make pass teh ball more, he's got the biggest heart among the rockets bench just like Bobby.

Weslinder, please explain. Why do you consider him more competitive than say Rafer or whoever. What did he do differently? I didn't watch any of his games. So please forgive my ignorance.

He wasn't nearly as good a ballhandler or passer as Rafer, but he went to the rim relentlessly, played tough hard-nosed defense, and wasn't afraid to give a hard foul. His attitude was contagious on the floor.

So it's not really he was more athletic or a skilled passer or good shooter, it was more his attitude?

He was a Battier in guard's body but with more skills, more hustle, more heart. He had no fear on the court.

If Rafer is a chicken, Sura is an eagle.

wow I guess time heals all wounds LOL

Sura is basically Mike James with a worse jump shot. Please don't overrate him.

So if Bob Sura was still healthy and in the lineup today. Would you start him over everyone else we have at point guard ? Would he be our answer at point guard? Just wondering.

BOb won't let you take his game. You can not intimidate him.

This is one thing that Rockets lack so far. When the game becomes more physical, rockets run out of fuel. We get burned.

I appreciate the foul he put on Josh Howard but I didn't appreciate the many times he refused to pass to Yao in the post and instead took a contested jumper.

Well, I was essentially referring to the mental aspect of the game. Sura was caucasian for that matter. :p

Sura got some trip-dubs on the Hawks. Nearly got some on the Rockets.

Sura worked his ass off every play. And he could board like crazy. And hit layups and 2s. He wasn't a superstar, but he wasn't a brick machine like Rafer, nor a gunner like James.

He was a very good rebounder. He was an average shooter and a good finisher. He was exceptionally athletic before he got to the Rockets, but age had taken some of that off. But his attitude was incredible. He really played with an edge.

I think I would, but I would certainly love having him as an option. He was a combo guard and not very good at the entry pass, so I would consider starting Rafer over him.

I forgot what the exact win ratio was but its something like

30-10 with Bob in the starting lineup.

He was terrible with any sort of passes. The man played hard and hustled though, and was a good option off the bench. But there's no way that he should be classified anywhere near "good" while he was with us. I'll go with average, and leave it at that.

I think 30-10 with Yao and TMac playing with him in the starting lineup would probably be a better indicator. :D
