I'll admit, I haven't seen the guy play very much, but those games that I have, the guy hasn't caught my eye at all as a difference maker. Seriously, though, it seems like some people here act like he would have been the answer at center. The guy is already 26, and doesn't average great numbers in even decent minutes. I was just wondering why his name was even mentioned in the realm of a trade involving Kevin Martin. If we had traded Martin, and Gortat was the main piece of that trade, Morey should have been ran out of town (I don't think Morey ever would have done that, though). Or maybe I'm blowing the interest in Gortat out of proportion, or I didn't read thoroughly enough, which could be the case? My other question: What about someone like Houstonian DeAndre Jordan? Granted, he'd be a little tougher to get, but I think his upside is far better.
A Martin for Gortat trade was never going to happen straight up as mentioned. The big deal with Gortat, its in the advanced numbers if you're into rebounding rate, defensive rating, block % and all that. Extrapolate his stats over more minutes, and it compares favorably to the 2nd tier midlevel centers like Anderson Varejao, Brenden Haywood, Joel Przybilla, Erick Dampier, Samuel Dalembert, etc. A double double 10-10, 2 blocks kinda guy. Importantly for Houston, a DURABLE center with actual size who can play FULL minutes defending the paint. Its just and indicator of what you maybe could get with extended minutes.
how abt this trade? Jared Jeffries + one of the trade exceptions(one from Ariza and one from Yao) for Chris Kaman
And you know he can play FULL minutes how? Marcin Gortat is a career 13.3 mpg player who has never played more than 15.8 mpg.
I think for most it is the excitement and hope that he will really be that good and we will be the ones that win that lottery. Obviously a great deal of people on this board have no clue about Gortat and his skills. You just hear things that "credible" sources say and hope. Maybe we will get lucky and snatch him up and he will be a great center and the piece that we needed to win a championship...I hope.
Because he's the one that got away. I haven't seen him play much either, but he has height. He is another tall dude, wouldn't want him if we have to give up players in our rotation.
After paying closer attention to Hayes, I don't think that we need an upgrade People call him the chuck-wagon... But he's more like "The Great Wall II" I mean, Griffin could not move Chuck Hayes yesterday. And Griffin is a strong dude from what everyone says.
Guy is a 7 footer, can move and can play defense along with a nice offense game...that is VERY hard to find. Love Chuck and his lower base allows him to stay strong defensively but to often there is a lineup line and while the team is winning, the schedule is about to get A LOT harder with better post players.
You realize that Orlando paid this guy $7 million knowing that he would sit on the bench most of the time right? That's how rare and important these kind of big men are.
I'm not that high on Gortat, but... I would trade for him only if we didn't give up one of our core players.. But doesn't look like that's gonna happen.
He does nothing that Jordan Hill can't do (or won't be able to in a year or so). He really is not worth the money.
How about Brooks, Jefferies, Bud for Nazr, Livingston and 1 first rounder? We get a PG with size, ability to play multiple spots, and athleticism. Nazr is an expiring and a decent center on both sides. And a first rounder since we are giving more talent then getting. And our rotation mess would be cleared up! They would get a talented pg in brooks, another young prospect to play, and the versatile JJ. Lowry/Livingston/Ish/Lee Martin/Lee/Williams/Livingston Battier/Williams/Livingston Scola/Hill/Patterson Nazr/Miller/Hayes/Hill
Gortat is a starter in this league and he's locked in at $6-7M per year which is actually a bargain if you consider some of the ridiculous contracts being thrown at centers around the league. He can do at $6-7M what all those chumps like Biedrins, Chandler, Dalembert, Okafor, etc get paid $10M+ to do.
Gortat is a good center, he would fit perfectly with our team, he has pretty good defense presence, good shot blocking ability and descent offensive game. I wouldn't say that everyone is high on him but he was a good center to go after.
"Difference Maker" is not what we need at center ATM IMHO. I believe we just need a servicable big to clog the lane, change a bunch of shots and actually block a few while in the process grab a 10 or more rebounds. For the money/need he would just be a good fit. I don't think there is an infatuation with Gortat.
He's playing behind Dwight Howard. He will never play more than 15.8 mpg unless Howard gets hurt. The best you can look at is if his PER numbers remain consistent as the best indicator that he's not a fluke. But he's been in the league for a few years now so I'm assuming Morey has done his homework. He seems to be a servicable big that can play consistent minutes. Right now we have NOBODY that we can rely on to play 30mpg at 5. When you play a position by comittee then that screws up your "chemistry". Morey seems to think Gortat could be that guy. If he can pull it off without losing any starters then I'm for it.
