just read a article which is pretty funny and true and great for tonights match up in dallas F the mavs The Mavericks and Spurs represent one of the more lively rivalries in the NBA. Granted, it'll likely never rise to the level of Celtics/Lakers, but in Texas, this is one heated series. And one other thing you just can't miss- fans of both teams really can't stand each other. I've attended many Mavs/Spurs games, both in Dallas and San Antonio, and the level of trash talk back and forth is fairly intense. Has been for years now, even when the Mavericks weren't all that good. Spurs fans liked to rub it in when Dallas was down. And when the Mavs started becoming decent in the late 90's, this rivalry reached a whole new level. Suddenly, the little kid on the block was all grown up. And just realizing who the big bully in the neighborhood was. From talking to Spurs fans, they seem to generally think that Mavericks fans are spoiled, rich, snobby and self-entitled. Much of that stems from the reputation of Dallas itself, I think. Mavs fans believe Spurs fans are arrogant, obnoxious, and overly zealous for their one-horse town team. Mark Cuban helped fan the flames of this rivalry, when he trashed the Riverwalk in comments he made before a playoff series. No question, it's a lot of fun to witness the back-and-forth between fans of both teams. I've seen one instance in which the fun and talking almost came to blows out in the AAC parking lot after a game. But mostly, this is a rivalry with a lot of mutual respect flowing, even if fans from both sides don't want to admit it.
I'm still happy that, out of all the teams in the league, the Mavs were the ones cheated out of a championship.
Take out Tim Duncan and they'll have a decent chance for a win tonight. I say that, and watch Duncan go for 30 tonight, heh.
It is Texas, as great a state this is, we are competitive as heck. Every professional sport team in a city of Texas, much like its citizens, considers other Texas teams and cities rivals. I am a Texas homer, so I was rooting for Dallas to win that championship after letting the Heat get back into the series to push it to 6-7 games but surprise surprise it was the year of Shaq and Wade. Regardless, Spurs, Mavs and Rockets will always kind of hate each other, their is no other way for the teams to act considering how much their success often depends on the other teams' failure.
I really only feel a rivalry against Dallas. They have had so many hate-able people; Cuban, Stackhouse, Terry, Dampier, Howard. The only reason I don't like SA is because they are such a well-managed franchise and always seem to continue to be relevant. Duncan can be a cry baby and Manu is a huge flopper but they are both players I would love to have on the Rockets, I can't say that about most Mavs.
But mostly, this is a rivalry with a lot of mutual respect flowing, even if fans from both sides don't want to admit it. ^Nobody has respect for Dallas. I think Spurs and Rockets fans have more of a mutual respect, fun little rivalry, and we both hate the Mavs with a passion. That's how it is with every single Mavs, Spurs, and Rockets fan I know.
I agree. I have no hate for the Spurs. In fact, I would say they are my 2nd favorite team. But I hate all things Dallas and so do the few Spurs fans I know.
Cheated out of a Championship? Sorry, but they choked it away after being up 2-0. I don't want to hear the excuses about how Wade couldn't be touched. The Heat swept the final 4 games.
This morning I was tying my 5 year old's shoes getting him ready for school...sitting in the room with him and my 9 year old. Watching ESPN. Highlights of Mavs/Spurs game comes on. 5 year old: who is the good guy? 9 year old: it's the spurs and mavs...neither are good guys. if you root for either, you'll need to find another place to live.
