Can someone explain why we have so many PFs on our squad? Scola/Blakely/Cousin/Hill/Morris/Parsons/Patterson/Scola? if we drafted Patterson last year and he did a damn good job why did we draft Morris even though Scola is our starter and Patterson comes off the bench? I don't understand..we need a 5...not a million 4s.
First off you named Scola twice and failed to mention D-Mo. Blakely isn't a PF he's 6'5 that's listed as a SF and can play SG. More than likely Blakely and Cousin won't make the team though. Parsons is more of a SF that can play some PF and Morris was drafted to play SF and potentially start at the position. Which I see Scola, Patterson, D-Mo, and Hill with Parsons and Morris playing some of both forward positions. I agree we definitely need a 5 and I'm sure that when all this comes to an end we'll get us a decent center. I personally believe that Scola needs to go and let Patterson step in. But we'll just have to wait and see what Morey does.
Blakely won't make the roster, and probably neither will Cousin who is more of a 5. Morris and Parsons are 3's with ability to play the 4. Our only true 4's are Patterson, Scola and Hill. Although Hill gets most of his minutes at the 5. There's also Donatas who's a 4, but I get feeling that the Rockets project him more of 5 long term, given his 7'1 frame. There's also Chuck Hayes, but I get a feeling that the Rockets aren't going to make the biggest effort to resign him.
I hope you're wrong. He's turned into one of my favorite Rockets. He seems to keep improving. We probably do have to make that 3-for-1 type deal somewhere (no, I don't know for who) for us to keep Hayes, though.
Cousin is a center. Blakely is a swingman. Parsons is a 3pt shooting small forward. He has never played PF. Scola was counted twice. Your list has as many non-PF's as it has PF's. It is more about exxageration than an excess of PF.
Why would someone create an account just to make a thread where half the post is just flat out wrong? Although it would be fun it Scola really does count as two power forwards.
Think your talking about bynum there. Don't think scola's knee injury was all that bad. Seem to remember him doing fine after his surgery.
As someone who has coached before I would say that I would much rather have two good post players in the lineup who were shorter than some tall stiff out there on the court mucking things up. In this new era of the NBA you dont necessarily need height, you need rebounds, post defense, and points in the paint. Blocked shots are pretty irrelevant actually. Kinda like bunting in baseball. 2 good PF's > 1 good PF and a bad center -I agree the Rockets need a GOOD center, but until there is one avaliable that can OUTPRODUCE Chuck Hayes than I dont care to waste a roster spot on him. I care, and the Rockets should care, about PRODUCTION not size. By all accounts, while playing center, there are many other centers playing heavy minutes with NBA teams that Chuck outproduced on the floor despite being labeled a Power Forward.
FYI... I would take a charge over a blocked shot any day. You guarentee a full posession on offense, and add a foul to the opposing player on their team. -Blocked shots are good for imtimidation but not sure how imtimidation translates to wins.
In fairness to the blocked shot, charges cannot lead to fast breaks, and blocks are one of the top ways to get the crowd into the game. If you have a player with the ability to block shots, you're not really going to ask him to look for charges instead.
I would too, but the problem is there area a lot more opportunities throughout a game to change or discourage shot attempts around the basket by challenging them (don't have to be blocks), than there are opportunities to take a charge. Rockets can't challenge **** around the basket, and haven't been able to for two years. It's the biggest need on the team. Just look at how far their team defense dropped the season Yao went out.
Right, understandable, but Im saying I would take two PF's to play the post over a bad or even mediocre Center who will give less production in the defensive areas that really matter. Nobody is going to tell Yao Ming to take charges because of injury more than anything, not because a charge wouldn't get the crowd involved. -Also a post player "taking up space in the paint" in theory doesn't have anything to do with their size, however.... size can help if the center knows the defensive rotation and has good lateral quickness. (Recall Yao Ming at the beginning of the season last year when he was clearly not right health wise, and out of basketball shape. He hurt them on defense for the first few games because of his lack of lateral movement and speed of the game getting the best of him. At that time, Chuck Hayes covered more area in the paint for help defense.) Give me two PF's who collect rebounds, guard their man effectively, and rotate well on defense. Getting the crowd in the game doesnt necessarily lead to wins on the stat sheet, however I would consider it positive to the overall game watching experience. Something that upper management would like more of Im sure. Im not saying you dont need a center, Im just saying playing two good PF's can produce more wins than a bad center who cant execute and a PF.
