Why should I get a 360 instead of a PS3?

I'm considering picking up one of these two systems during the holiday season, but I can't decide which one. In the past it would have been 360 all the way, but since the price drops I'm leaning quite a bit in favor of PS3.

Here are some facts that are effecting my decision...

    - All of my friends have 360 and play online, while only 1 friend has PS3. I'm not real big on online gaming, but it'd be nice if I could play with my friends every now and again. I realize PS3's online service is extremely basic, but it's also free and has Wi-Fi out of the box. It's almost a wash on this issue.

    - I have a fairly nice TV but do not have an HD DVD or Blu-Ray player yet. The fact that the PS3 comes with a Blu-Ray player is a big plus.

    - Does PS3 have any type of system that's similar to 360's achievements? That type of thing adds a lot to my enjoyment of a game.

So, should I go for the PS3 or is there something I'm not considering?

I've always had a Playstation, but the games seem better this gen for the 360 -- the Bioshock game for instance looks better than anything i've seen on the PS3. If Grand Theft comes out on both consoles I might have to go with the X-Box -but- only if microsoft ever get all the bugs out. I don't want to send in my game machine multiple times as many have with the 360.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I'm concerned with the dying 360's I hear about all the time. Do PS3's have the same problem?

I'm also not a Halo fan, in case anyone was going to make a case based on that :p

I would get a 360 just for Halo 3.. but that's because I'm a huge Halo geek. The only thing I'd get over 360 is a Wii.

No. The PS3 and Wii have virtually no hardware issues. The 360 comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty so you should be covered.
High Def movies are pretty amazing. They look way better than anything HD you might see on cable. That would be a big plus for me.
I'm not sure what you are asking here.

Playing online is a lot of fun. It would be hard to turn down the chance to play with so many friends with the 360 but the PS online service isn't really inferior. It's free and works fine.

There is A LOT of media to buy on the xbox live marketplace though and not that much on the PS store. Not sure how big an influence that is for you. Sony is suppose to be implementing something similar but who knows when that goes into effect.

What type of games do you like to play? There have been similar threads in the last few months with a lot of the pros and cons for each system. It all comes down to what you are looking for.

Looks like I made my last post just a minute too late. Also, for the record I already have Wii.

Hmm.. how could you not be a Halo fan?!?! :)

So you're gonna have a Wii and a 360/PS3?? Wow I wonder how long until you won't even have time to play just one of those systems. I envy you. I'm still stuck with the fist xbox.

I'm asking about the 360 Achievements system. Is there anything similar on PS3?

I like different types of games. I'm hooked on Mario Galaxy right now, but some other games I've fallen in love with in the past are Resident Evil, Ico, Soul Calibur, NBA2k series, and Oblivion. I'm not genre discriminant.

The reason I posted a new thread was because of the recent price drops. They obviously weren't factored in to older discussions.

If most of your friends play on-line and you're willing to pay for Live, then go for the 360. It's way more fun to play on-line w/ friends rather than playing by yourself.

I have a PS3 but other than Socom and Metal Gear Solid, all the good games that are coming out for PS3 are also coming out for 360, but not vice versa.

Sony's response to achievements is basically the trophies for Home. If you reach a certain milestone (5 headshots in a row in UT3 or something), you get a trophy to add to your trophy room in Home (or people can view these via the XMB IIRC). I think they might have mentioned something about using these together with other services in Home, although at this point, there isn't must use in thinking about what Home could offer. They can't even get the basic service up and running. In addition to that, a lot of Sony 1st party games implement an achievents-like system in the game itself, which is usually a better experience since developers can reward you for your achievements (IIRC, in Uncharted, you can unlock "cheats" that give you new skins, new "next-gen" graphical effects, reversed levels, etc.).

I agree with Brando2101 about the online services though. The PSN offers more than enough for me when it comes to playing games online (and for free :)), and hopefully it will continue to improve. They've been working on "matching" a few XBL features for a while...much like all the other features they've been working on :(. There seems to be a bit less lag in general for PS3 games, which is probably 10x more important than any small features the PSN does or doesn't offer. The lack of content (compared to XBL) is pretty big though, and is definitely one of the things I'm most disappointed about with Sony (how could they not take advantage of this considering everything they do?). More friends on XBL is a big factor too; it actually had a bigger influence on me than I thought it would (several of my friends had 360s instead of PS3s as well).

Do you play games on your PC? I remember you getting a new PC (or graphics card) for Oblivion. As someone who plays PC games, I've always found it hard to justify buying a Xbox platform since the games tend to release on both platforms (albeit after a delay in some cases for the PC version). Nearly all the 360 games I'm interested in will make their way to the PC (or even the PS3) if they haven't already; on the other hand, most of the PS3 exclusives will be PS3-only. If this isn't an issue, it is probably easier to justify a 360 purchase, but otherwise, it might be pretty hard given what you've already said IMO.

360, Xbox Live is great. So user friendly. Also, I think you'll find yourself playing online more than you think.

i have had my friend's 360 at my house for months. but am still going to get a new tv and ps3. i think eventually the graphics will outpace xbox's in a few years. i will have the blu ray in there for crazy movies and will get my true moneys worth out of the tv i get. plus the online is free and has the wi fi.

for me the games like bio shock and a few others if i miss out i miss out. i usually have a chance to see what they are about at a friends house usually anyways.

so with the cost coming down for the ps3 it just seems the right choice for me.

oh and also i have way more friends on xbox then ps3 dont care. people will eventually start picking them up. and for the meantime i can meet new people online to play with.

360 is a better multiplayer experience, and has more games.

PS3 has a Blue Ray player

    Both are a good choice.

As for the 360 and the crashes, they finally sorted that problem out with the latest versions, I have had 3 crash but this latest one, ROCK solid.

This is what I keep hearing about PS3, that with the integrated blu-ray drive, the games will eventually become more and more elaborate in a way the 360 won't be able to keep up with. Is this true?

i'm not a Halo fan either, but I like my 360 better (I have both). I just like the gameplay better, and the controller. And mine died but when I shipped it off, they sent me a new one in 6 days and got a free month of xBox live, so its not so bad.

well, I think it's very possible. You see games like Ratchet and Clank and uncharted right now and it's already unbelievable, what we have seen from the PS3 right now is already on par with the best the 360 has to offer(don't look at all the multi-plat ports).

The PS3 in 1 year is already on par with 360 2 years in, we will start seeing some killer games in 7-8 years, everyone has bee saying that the PS3 will have long legs, so it's a good investment.

I have a PS3, but I use mine mostly for movies...

My brother just got one and one thing we both didn't realize was that the 40GB PS3 ($399) isn't backwards compatible and it doesn't have slots for your memory cards, etc...If that isn't important, then that one's fine, otherwise, spend the extra $100...

    360.

Sony can try all they want but they'll never match the Live experience.

    Wii60, baby.

That was the entire reason i bought the 360 in the first place. But i don't even play it anymore. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is all the reasoning you need.
This game is absolutely classic - the graphics in-game are ridiculously good.

By the way - i love the realistic aspect to the Ghuille Suits - that Sniper mission is easily the best so far in the game.
