I've been reading post and ideas about who the Rockets should pursue via trade or free agency. A few weeks ago i podered and posted the idea of Damon Jones and still believe he would be a good fit here. Today I pose the possibility of another scenerio,Jason Terry.

Terry isn't Francis and nor should he be compared to unless you're showing that the both were 2 guards in college and now are pg's. Neither are pure setup pg's but do play the position in some capacity. Many will argue that terry shoots too much and have the same problems as Francis has, but if you look at the big picture, its not really like that.

We can look and see that Francis and Terry had thier eorse seasons as pro's. Francis had a hard time adjusting to JVG and Ming ,while the Hawks blew their team up. Looking at everything though, Terry has shown he can run a team with a overrall 2:1 ratio over his career. In 2002/03, he avg 7.4 asst vs 3to's which is pretty good. Now to the good part. How do the rockets make this deal?

The Rockets have options on this front. First, they can offer Taylor for terry straight up. The Hawks might want a pick down the line, but as long as its protected, no problem. Another could be offering the TE for terry. Terry's contract and the TE are equal. but again the Hawks might want a pick or something. The more logical idea would be this scenerio. Taylor,TE, and a future 1st rd pick for Terry and Alan Henderson. Why? terry fills the role as pg with Lue coming off the bench while Henderson backs up Howard and Ming. How does this really benefit Rockets? After the season, both are free agents and if Terry plays well in a team concept, the rockets can have a team in place that will be of championship quality for many yrs. Just a thought.

Yes, I like his game. Although, he was lower on my list.

    Last year stats (2003-2004): 16.8 PPG, 5.4 APG, 2.8 TOPG, .410 FG% (blah), .340 3PT%, 82 FT%, 1.5 SPG.

He's no super star. But he'd be a good fit with McGrady/Yao.

I really like getting guys who has been on sorry team who has a point to prove. I remember people on this board bashing Andre Miller because he played on some sorry teams, but when surrounded with good players, he played well. I think and all the losing that he's endured would come in and do what JVG want him to do. He can score when he needs to but also just running the offense. Getting him and Henderson free money up also. Just a thought.

I wouldn't feel fomfortable with two undersized PGs on the roster, especially when one of them is as bad as Terry is defensively. Terry's a great shooter and a pretty good passer, but he has trouble passing over taller guards and is more of a gunner than a point.

That said, if we could have him for just Taylor and a pick, I'd be all for it. But I think he'd be better suited as a scorer off the bench behind a steadier, more consistent player. He's just such an awful defender.

I'm not sure why the Hawks would be interested in Taylor. I think they're planning on starting Harrington at the 4, with Josh Smith or Childress at the 3. Terry's contract is a year shorter than Taylor's, isn't it?

How is Terry undersized and he's the same size as Nash,Parker, to name a few. how can you say Terry is worse than Francis as a defender? Its all about team defense. If that was the case,Parker would get drug all the time. Terry has this yr under contract, then he's free.

This is why I didn't want the "6'1" (my foot) Fisher. Terry, at 6'2" is a little better. I'm not talking about one-on-one defense, but rather a size liability. So, I understand where you are coming from. But we all know that ANY player that we get WILL play defense under JVG. It's inevitable.

Yes, I'd rather have Terry than Fisher. I'd take that risk. Why? What kinda numbers would Fisher be getting on the Hawks. I just think that Terry is more capable with less talent. Just think how he'd do with more talent on his team.

He's 6'2, 170. Awfully slinky. Parker's the same size, Nash is 6'3, 190. Terry gets both blown-by and outmuscled. It's saying something when you're the worst defender on a team that has Big Dog and Shareef Abdur-Rahim, and he was. I don't doubt that he could be a good defender, he is quick enough, but he's been in the league for five seasons. I don't see it happening.

If it's between Terry and Lue, I'd pull the trigger on that trade in a second. But I'm still intriuged by Antonio Daniels.

Oh, I was thinking Terry, if we didn't get Daniels.

The same Daniels who was handed the job after Avery Johnson was let go only to lose it to a 19 yr old rookie pg from another country. You want to talk about a career back-up, then talk about Daniels. After they got rid of Daniels, a backcourt of parker/claxton help the spurs win the title. I would say both are undersized.

Yeah, and the same Daniels who led the league in assist to turnover ratio last year. The same Daniels who has shown the ability to make the player he's guarding work to score points. The same Daniels who makes $6mil less than Jason Terry. The same Daniels who we could acquire without losing frontcourt depth.

Can we also talk about Damon Jones, then?

I don't see how the Parker/Claxton argument applies. They had Tim Duncan behind them. We have Juwan Howard. Yao already struggles with early foul trouble. I don't think adding Terry will be a tremendous help in that regard when opposing points are blowing right by him.

Oh, and as long as we're talking about Parker, if I remember correctly he fell apart in the playoff series against the Lakers this year when Phil let GP, a much bigger, stronger guard, get rough with him. I can imagine the same thing happening to Terry. Again, I think we should go after him if we keep running out of options, but I believe Daniels would be a better fit.

Terry is a nice player, but I don't think the Rockets have enough to make an offer for him.

Dont ask me why, but living in Savannah, GA I follow the Hawks a lot. We get a lot of their games on TV. While Terry is a nice player, I feel his game is very similar to that of Francis. He is a 2 guard trapped in a PG body and looks to score. I think he would be a dynamite Bobby Jackson type player off the bench but am not sure he would be a good candidate to run a team where he would have to give up shots to Yao and McGrady. Terry is a solid player and can score, but if he was here, he would have to play more disciplined and take less shots. Would he be willing to do that? I dont know.

That's what I was thinking. The TE is useless. Atlanta has a ton of caproom and no one to spend it on. Maybe Mo Taylor, but why would they want to take on albatross contracts for inferior players? They'd be better of keeping Terry than taking anything we can reasonably offer.

I like Terry's game. He would be a dependable starting PG and as long as he holds down the TO's I see no reason why he could not work out in Houston.

The same Daniels who replaced would-be savior Brent Barry at PG for most of the season in Seattle, yup.

There's nothing wrong with that. As long as you're not a turnover machine. Lower turnovers means that at least you know when and when not to pass.

    His FG% is crappy, though....

Nevertheless, if a 6'1" Fisher can find success under Shaq/Kobe. Then I think that a 6'2" Terry can find some success under a McGrady/Yao.

    Two point leebigez:

    1. I've already mentioned in another thread where you brought up Terry, the Hawks have absolutely no guard depth on their roster. In fact since Sura is a FA, Terry is the only guard they have under contract. If they trade Terry for Mo or the TE, then they will have absolutely no PGs or SGs on their roster. There is no way they will move Terry without picking up a bunch of backcourt players first.

    2. Your example of Andre Miller moving to a better team and playing better is way offbase. He had, by far his best year in Cleveland. He averaged over 10 apg and was looking to be "the next great pg". Since leaving Cleveland, his game has completely sunk. His assists have gone down, and if you watch him play, he seems to be looking for his shot more than he is looking to create for his teamates. It's bizarre. It's like he's caught the Clipper selfish disease and can't be cured even with a new team and a fat contract.

terry is a scoring PG like francis. the team would be better with a true play-maker like jones, and jones can nail open 3s too.

To be fair, Jason Terry's full season as PG is good enough to wipe the floor with Francis' best.

They may have similar mindsets, but Terry is more capable of passing efficiently IMO.

The thing that intruiges me about him is that he's a good shooter and can only improve with so many open looks.

It's not the best option in the world, but one of the better ones. However, I have no clue about whether or not he is capable of passing into the post, which is ALWAYS something to consider.
