I know this has subject has been discussed many times, but all this power forward talk is driving me nuts. Is the guy any good at all ? He is only 21 years old. At 6'11", 240 lbs with a 32" vert. Not to mention a 7 foot 4" wing span ! He has to be able to rebound and block some shots. Any update on his progress, will he be here for training camp?
I am sure he will be invited again to our Summer League team. From the bits and pieces I have read about Badiane it sounds like he is a little more further away in his development than Spanoulis who is expected to compete for a roster spot next year. My guess is the Rockets resign Deke to a 2 year deal and then leave Badiane over-seas for the next 2 years to get more seasoning and then bring him over when Deke retires. We might all be surprised, but I dont think Badiane will be our answer at the PF spot "next" year.
Does anyone know for sure if we are having a summer league team this year? We didn't have one last year.
I think we are and I think Badiane, Spanoulis and our potential 1st round pick would all be participating. Should be interesting. But my question is, will the NBA conduct the summer leagues if they havent settled the new CBA by then?
Badiane is expected to stay overseas for at least another season. Even the perfect NBA body doesn not promise the neccessary skill level and mindset to succeed. See Brown, Kwame. Evan
I don't think Badiane's timing has anything to do with how long Deke is a Rocket. Deke = backup C. Badiane = potential future starting PF. I like the idea of keeping some of our vets while also getting younger. You could see from the beginning of Game 7 vs. Dallas that their young legs were simply faster than our geriatrics. Smart, vet savvy is one thing, but the speed & quickness of youth is something severely lacking on this team. Maybe Spanoulis is the answer there. If Badiane can develop a go-to offensive move, then I think he'll be ready to test the NBA waters. Otherwise, it'll be like when Ryan Bowen was on the court vs. the Mavs. A guy like Dirk just camps out in the lane and waits for the offense to come at him.
Being a freakish athlete does not make someone an NBA player. The speed and movement of NBA games is hard to pickup on. This guy might never connect with all of that.
The truth is that Badiane probably isn't ready. The guy barely gets to play on his euro team so I doubt he would be able to come to the NBA and help us out right away. I'm pretty sure Badiane will stay in Germany the next 2 seasons.
I kinda used the Deke timing in terms of when I thought Badiane would come over but I am not saying they have anything to do with each other. I just think Badiane is at least 1 or perhaps 2 more years away and in two years Deke will be gone. Badiane will be a PF but the "skillset" he brings to the Rockets is what Deke has now in terms of game changing shot blocking and rebounding.
That would be great if our guys could play for NBDL teams.. But anyways.. I like how we're gonna do what the Spurs do..have veterans with young guys..a good balance.. I hope Span and Badman are good
I think that Badiane is not even an option right now. I saw that he wasn't even starting or playing significant minutes in his German team. Hopefully he can pick up the game a bit better. If the NBDL is inserted, then Badiane could benefit from learning the NBA game instead of the European game. The European game really benefits the point guards, the small forwards, and the shooting guards. But I think that Centers and Power forwards aren't really benefited that greatly. Especially when the European league empahsises shooting more than a low post bang game.
I do not know where you are getting your information from. For starters, guards come along faster than big men. Vassilis has been doing well for his team, Maroussi Honda, this season and he continues to improve on a game to game bases. At this point I will dare say he is already at Beno Udrih's developement point as at when he entered the NBA. The knock I foresee on Vas is that he may not be our answer for a pure point guard rather he is a gritty, fearless combo guard. But Malick is not that further behind all things put into proper pespective. It was unfortunate that injury (3 months injury layoff) cost him a chance to shine in the more NBA-level Euroleague thereby setting back his development (I anticipate). He came back to injury in February 12 and he has been playing consistently and steadily improving in minutes and stats. We have heard it before - the Euro leagues does not suit Malick well and I believe this. It is just like sending Samuel Dalembert to play for Marroussi in Greece. He will struggle with their style and being a rookie he will struggle early to get PT. I only hope things will break his way this summer and JVG will give him a chance on our 15-man to continue his developement from here. Malick had his best game since his return three weeks ago (12 points from 5-8 shooting and 9 boards) and in fact he has not had anything less than 5 boards since March 1 while playing a max of 31 minutes during that stretch. He had 9 boards last weekend while playing only 20 minutes and 33 seconds. If anything I bet he will be an upgrade over Spoon and Baker (if we can somehow get them off our roster this summer) Nothing is guarranteed but I will bet that Malick will be a Rocket for sure someday (sooner rather than later). Though his stats has been up and down lately, I suspect his hussle and effort on a nightly basis remain constant. He is a project who has the heart to someday become a force in the NBA. No one woulda thought that Samuel D and Big Ben woulf turn out this way until they were given a chance (interesting the same coach, Brown, brought out the best in them). It is my dream that Malick could be as valuable as a Dalembert, Elson, Hunter and other hussle guys in the NBA.
I found this on the Atlanta Hawks website--its a short interview of Malick when he worked out for them.... http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/As_Draft_Approaches_Badiane_-78715-33.html As Draft Approaches, Badiane & Rickert Strut Stuff With the NBA draft fast approaching (just two days away), the Hawks on Tuesday welcomed prospects Malick Badiane, Rick Rickert, Kirk Penney and Richard Jeter in for a workout at the Philips Arena practice facility. The Hawks will pick at No. 21 and No. 37 in NBA Draft 2003, coming on Thursday, June 26. Malick Badiane, 6-10, 230, Forward/Center, Langen (Germany) How did everything go out there? “It was a good workout, physical. I liked it. This is my eighth one.” How would you describe your game? “My job is to play defense, rebound and block shots.” Can you compare your game to a current NBA player? “Ben Wallace.” Any idea about where you will be drafted? “You never really know, but I think in the first round.” I don't know if that weight is right-- He looks heavier than 230...
Badiane is probably not going to be an NBA Player. He just isn;t very good. Get over the Badiane man crush, people.
It would be great if he could turn into a Dalembert or Hunter. His injuries have been unfortunate, as well as struggling to play their "style," but the truth is that all of this is hindering his development no matter what the reason is. The Rockets left him in Germany so he can improve his game, but it seems like he hasn't improved any or very little if any at all. I hope the Rockets bring him in for summer workouts and summer league play so we can get a first hand look at him.
I'm a gonna' say this one more time... the dude didn't start playing basketball until age 14. We drafted him at age 19 after he had only one year of professional bball. His work ethic and his body will put him on our bench either this year or next year. And in five years he's gonna' stuff these words you just typed into the fifth row. cheers, Brock
