http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/ts_pct_active.html http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/ts_pct_career.html http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/barrybr01.html Brent Barry is amazingly efficient... leader among active players in True Shooting %, and 10th All Time. Yep... higher TS% than Kevin McHale. And he's still going strong: TS% over the last couple of years (or rather 1.5 years, he missed a lot of games in 07/08) were above career average. The guy is no star, but he does know what a good shot is. Do you think Barry can teach young Mr. Greene a thing or two about shot selection? Definitely, definitely.
Do you like players who can beat guys off the dribble and provide penetration behind Tracy and Shane?
This is why we will always be a mediocre team with a bunch of aging or one dimensional players IMO. If you want Barry to teach Greene how to improve his shooting selection hire him as an assistant coach after his playing days are over.Battier is 29 and could be useful for a while longer but Brent Barry is nearly 37 years even though he can pass and shoot. He is likely only to turn up in 1 out of 5 games. He won't be able to help the team much even if he is better than Head.
Subthread topic: Why Barry won't be a Rocket 1. He loves SA. 2. His family is settled in SA and he is approaching the end of his career. 3. SA will arguably be better than the Rockets again next season and have a better chance at winning it all.
No, I agree, I am just hoping that we get some backup to the backup for injuries etc...but I guess Greene could be considered that guy. I am all for upgrading the Rockets...trust me...... Now if we can just get a PG. DD
With salaries nowadays, Pietrus is probably seeing money close to MLE. There is always a rush of overspenders at the beginning.
Barry is the right person who the rockets need now. He is a great shooter and good playmaker with 2 rings.
You're right,no one. We need a better backup SG than Head but our PG situation is also worse than it appears. An old Bobby Jackson is still better than Brooks who needs a lot of time to improve. We can't rely on SF. Rafer did a good job but he might not be able to play the entire 82 games plus the playoffs. He will always be an inconsistent PG. Morey tried his best by getting Mike James,SF,and Jackson.Nothing helped. I would suggest split the MLE between Landry if he is fit and a 25 year old Duhon who still would be better than anyone else.
How is getting Brent Barry BAD for the team? Sure he's old but it's not like we're wanting him to be starting PG. This guy is more productive with his minutes than Bobby Jackson and Luther Head combined. If anything he's somewhat of an upgrade. Not to mention he has plenty of experience to share.
I'm not going to beat this in the ground, but here is a test for all those that favor getting Barry. If Tracy misses 10-12 games, do you feel he can be a adequate replacement for Tracy? Thats the point. He isnt capable of playing big minutes. When i say big minutes, i'm talking 25 plus. Brent barry can help any hoop team, but he has to be used in certain situations. Barry is a situational player. As long as u get him with that idea, cool, but if u think he's more than that, ur going to be disappointed.
Hey, the sky isn't falling. Barry would be only *one* piece, a solid upgrade over Head and offer improved shooting off the bench at a reasonable price. You want to sign the entire mid-level exception on a player, tell me who would take that at the 2-3 position who would accept it who is worthwhile? Considering the Rockets will have to dip into the mid-level to pay Landry, this is a good option with plenty of trade options still available.
Again the voice of reason. Barry is a good fit for the Rockets. He is not a star or starter but he is a dead on shooter who can back up TMac and even play a few minutes at PG when Tmac is running the offense. Barry almost shot 50% from the arc in the playoffs. How can you argue with that when TMac shot an abysmal 5-24 and the 2 players backing him up (BJax,Head) shot a combined 5-30. Adding Barry alone might have got us passed Utah that series. But now we have Yao back and Scola is more experienced and Dorsey will give us more bulk, Brooks will improve and maybe even Greene will surprise and contribute by mid season. Not to mention the team still hasn't truly picked up Adelman's offense and they managed a 22 game win streak with what they did comprehend. Things are looking up and I am sure Morey is not done and still has a surprise for us like maybe a trade that brings in another PG. It's just the beginning of the off season and Dorsey, Greene and Barry or a good start. And 33 win streak is in the future along with a championship.
