Actually, isn't the whole "Nguy-" silent? Nguy = w hence, wen <win>. I don't know, our Vietnamese friends could explain.
It's not silent. It takes both the N and the G to make that sound in Vietnamese. The N alone or the G alone would be a different consonant sound.
