Why is Juwan Howard not considered the third option?

I keep reading many posts about lack of a third scoring ption. Yet I see that Juwan Howard has been on the team for the past couple of years and until he joined the Rockets was a career 18/8 man and perhaps potential HOFer.

With the Rockets his production has drastically decreased from his numbers in previous seasons (but he is still a career 17/7 man!) but when he has been called upon to take up the slack in scoring, he has certainly responded well. With a man of Juwan Howard's talents and abilities and proven production, I don't understand why he is not and has not been considered and used as the so-called third option.

Because he sucks. He's good at shooting a wide- open mid- range jumper and finishing the occasional post move but otherwise he is not a consistent scoring option.

Howard is just lacking in the skills to be anything but a back up player in the 21st.Cent NBA. He is slow, non athletic and well past his peak.
His only saving grace is that he can be pressured into making an efort when key players are missing. These peaks are rare moments when he plays like we all would like him to play in every game.

The thing is because he is a PF, he can't camp on the mid-range since he has to crash the boards too . Otherwise, I will prefer he take all the wide-open mid-range shots than our guards taking the give-me-a-heart-attack threes.

this is proof that there are 2 types of people on this board:

    people who watch nba games

    and

    people who look at stats

Future HOF? LOL. Dude has been on horrible teams his whole NBA career and stats are so inflated because of that.

    Juwan a Hall of Famer?

of what? ping pong? reading childrens books?

Stromile should win MVP if Juwan makes the hall of fame.
hell, Shandon Anderson would be runner up.

He's not a legit third option because:

    1. He usually needs a lot of touches to get his points. And since a third option isn't going to get as many touches as the first and second, he naturally should have the ability to score efficiently.

    2. Juwan's jumper is very hit or miss. Some games, he's unconscious and even clutch with his jumper, and other games he's stone cold.

Efficiency and consistency, that in a nutshell is why Juwan isn't a third option.

    R2D2,

the Rockets have some guy named Tmac and a tall chinese guy name Yao.
    Its called math.

put Juwan on the Lakers, he'd average 6 pts.
    it would be

    Juwan -6pts
    Mihm -4pts
    Lamar Odom -2pts
    Smush Parker -2pts
    Kobe -81pts

Juwan isn't a good 3rd option. Juwan should be our 4th option.

I think when most people say "3rd option" we're talking about Kyle Korver, or Manu or Mr. Longoria, or Tayshaun Prince. Someone who knocks down open shoots and isn't a superstar. We need a Bruce Bowen to help open up the offense and keep defenses from crowding yao and tracy or yao or tracy.

Juwan is more of a decent role player. He is consistent, but his jumper is key to his game. If its on, we're good to go, if its off then we might as well sub in chuck hayes.

Let's see the career numbers then:

    Juwan Howard 16.8ppg 46.9%FG
    Tony Parker 14.8ppg 47.4%FG
    Manu Ginoboli 12.7ppg 44.6%FG
    Tayshaun Prince 11.3ppg 46.4%FG
    Kyle Korver 9.1ppg 40.8%FG

Juwan Howard has the better production of any of the others that you named as third options. Yet somehow he isn't a third option?

    Sorry I don't get it.

The Mavs team Juwan was on won 53 games on 00-01. They lost to the Spurs in the semis.

Then they got rid of Juwan 53 games into the 2001-02 season, and proceeded to win 57, then 60 games after those two seasons.

the game is called basketball. any rockets fan who actually watches basketball would give up their liver and spleen for ginobli, parker, or prince to be on this team.

We need a Clutchfans BBS just for people who actually watch basketball. Clutch, you need to have some Wonderlic test to let people in this site.

I think we should focus on someone like Howard too. he has a pretty decent post up move.

I'm sick and tired of seeing us jack up so many threes. Rafer can't hit ****. and Wesley has been ailing lately. We have been shooting WAYYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyyyy too many threes lately.

Juwon is not an efficient/reliable enough scorer to be a 3rd option.

That being said you shouldn't rip on someone if they can't get access to actual games. Keep in mind that torrent files can take freakin' ages to DL sometimes and without a broadband connection it's pretty hard to constantly be downloading games.

Living outside of the US makes it even more difficult. I had to live on stats/internet for years until i got my broadband connection. (Thanks R2K for providing games).

So maybe consider these things-u guys in the U.S have it pretty good when it comes to watching the NBA.

But no, we need a better 3rd option than Howard. A 3pt shooter/slasher is preferred.
