why do people say "THE" ohio state unversity? like OSU players always emphasize "THE" when they introduce themselves on the superbowl or whatever.
because they say it like they are the cream of the crop.... "THE" means it is like "The one and only" "The great"....you see what i mean.
really? but people don't say THE Penn State University or THE University of Miami ... i could understand if there were multiple campuses or other schools named ohio state, but is there?
I want to know about "The University", if you know what I mean. Why is it always capitalized? With no identifying name? Because there's only supposed to be one real "university" and we're all supposed to know who that is? (And I graduated from there, too.)
That's because it's PENN STATE. You shouldn't have to use THE with Penn State. Penn State alone sounds pretty good to me. THE University of Miami doesn't sound half bad though.... As for The Ohio State University.... Which would you rather say? Ohio State University, or THE Ohio State University? It sounds better the second way - I'd rather stick THE in there!!
I've never heard that. I'll have to look out for it. I'm pretty sure the accepted way and the standard one is to say THE if it's "University of" and not use THE if it's the name of a state, city, or a name. I mean, saying The Ohio or The Texas Tech sounds stupid. You don't say The Stanford or The Harvard. I have heard people say THE infront of a name like OSU, but I always thought it was just the player being dumb. I didn't know they did it on purpose.
...because Ohio State students and alums all have small cocks and adding that "THE" in front of the school's name adds some sort of meaning to their pitiful existences... ...at least that's what somebody from Michigan told me one time...
Actually, they do. If you ever watch Monday night football and a guy from U of Miami introduces himself, they will often say "The U."
they do they say "the University of Miami" but OSU players always say "THEE (not thuh, thee) Ohio State University" to my knowledge they're the only school that does that.
sure, other schools say "the" too... but OSU people say it with an emphasis like i'm not just A bbs poster, i'm THE (heavy) bbs poster. they say it like THE ohio state university. you know what i mean?
what a bunch of knuckleheads. i don't know if it's the arrogance or the stupidity that bothers me most about this. can you imagine someone call themselves the paul or the christopher? damn geeks.
The OSU because there are several OSUs in the country. Oregan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, ... They think they are the best OSU
What about The Hulk? I mean, why can't he be just Hulk? Spiderman is just Spiderman, Batman isn't called "The Batman". Are there other Hulks he's worried about being confused with? And the University of Miami - can they be THE? Since there is a Miami University (Ohio) to contend with. It must be tough for those kids to insert parentheses every time they mention their school's name.
It is said like that to set it aside from all other schools. The emphasis on "THE" means that it is the one and only, the best, the one in by which all others are judged. I am pretty sure it is something that is taught and encouraged once you go to school there. If you look at publications from the school, it usually has The Ohio State University as the official name.
A couple of reasons: Ohio State University was originally named "Ohio State University", but later down the road the name of the school was actually changed to "The Ohio State University". So, technically, that is the correct name of the school. As for the football connotation, it started on a MNF game and Orlando Pace introduced himself as being from THE Ohio State University (adding emphasis to show OSU's position as a premiere university and the best university in the state of Ohio). Basically, showing pride for his school and football team. It caught on from there and everyone started doing it.
