Why is Dirk so tough to guard?

    Seriously.

I feel like I could shut him down one on one.

He dribbles so high and awkwardly. His fadeaway is the slowest most predictable thing I have ever seen. He is clumsy, makes mutumbo look like a freakin figure skater. It seems like he gets most of his points from wide open jump shots and flopping. When he drives to the basket he has no ability to change directions and get around people. He telegraphs passes and usually makes them late.

How in the world is this guy an MVP candidate?

cuz as clumsy as he might be, he is still alot less clumsier then 99.9% of the other 7-footers?

also cause he flops and whines like a 2 year old b****.

There's not a single guy in that entire list that can "shut him down one on one". It's not as easy as it "seems". You probably don't realize how big a 7 footer truly is. I've gone my entire life and have never stood directly next to anyone taller than 6'9", and I play basketball a LOT. At that height, with the touch that Dirk has from outside, you can't just play up on him on the perimeter because he'll rise up and shoot over you with his height advantage (his high release makes it even more deadly). You have to crowd him on the perimeter, but that doesn't work well either because although he's 7 feet, he has good ENOUGH handles to put the ball on the floor and go by his defender to find an open spot to get a shot off. He has an uncanny ability to stop on a dime for a guy his size, most usually right at the free throw line or on the elbows. Add fade away jumpers and awkward, unpredictable releases (he jumps off the "wrong" foot on a lot of shots) and suddenly you've got a basically unstoppable force. The only people that even really come close to giving him fits are players with an incredible combination of height/length and quickness. These are guys like Kevin Garnett, Shawn Marion, Tracy McGrady, maybe Tim Duncan when fully healthy.

Nobody can "shut him down one on one". That's true of any superstar.

I hate Dirk as much as the next Rockets fan, but to say he can't play basketball might be the most r****ded statement ever. You don't average 25 points, almsot 10 boards, 3 assists, and shoot 50% from the field and 40% from the three point line on accident...

I think people who could guard him effectively are the likes of, Shawn Marion,
    Stoudamire, even backpain-less tmac.

Man you can shut Dirk down. He's not like kobe, t-mac, wade etc that will bomb on you one on one double or triple team when they are in the zone.

The key to all this Dirk crap is THE TEAM. This mavericks team and especially their coach makes Dirk look better than he actually is. For instance put Dirk on the magic team T-Mac brought to the playoffs 3 out of 4 times and you'll see that if Dirk can reach the playoffs one time it will be ALOT.
To me players like kobe, t-mac, shaq ( not anymore ), wade etc are superstars, Dirk is below them. He's better than good, but not know superstar.

Dirk cant defend, flops, whines, overhyped, dork, weak, fails under pressure ( superstar ''media'' Dirk would have won that ring last season :D )

KG is the perfect guy to guard Dirk.

That said, the Rockets misplayed him last night, they should have been denying him the ball......like the Mavs did to Tmac in the 2nd half.

I agree that KG could shut down Dirk. Durant might someday. Prince should be able to. When those 14-18 footers are contested he simply fades away. He has a weak post game that fails to include any pet move. He rarely gets exposed because of the heavy fire power on that team. If you commit to him someone else will step up. Thats why I feel he isnt a championship caliber player. Almost Malone like. Team will only go as far as Terry and Howard push it. Which could be pretty damn far...

nobody can guard dirk because he's just that good. he's the best european player to ever play the game. he's the best shooter at 7 feet to ever play the game. and he's the mvp of the regular season thus far.

the dirk hate is just stupid. he's a great player, like him or not.

so the answer to this question is: dirk can't be stopped one one one because with his length he can shoot over anybody. and if he's guarded by a player with about the same height he still is able to score because he's got an unblockable fade away and his drive to the basket.

Because to guard a person--without fouling--you have to put a hand in their face. I've seen fingers just an inch or so from his eyes and he still drains the bucket. He may be awkward, but he doesn't need to have his eyes open on the release. His jumper is that good.

But good Lord does he whine. He looks like he's gonna start crying every time he doesn't get his way. I respect his game, but it sure is easy to dislike the guy.

i hate dirk as much as the next man on here, but he's a GREAT scorer.

and what makes him such a great scorer is the fact that he is nearly impossible to defend. he is 7 feet tall with long arms and a terrific jumper. his jumper is almost impossible to block unless you are 6'9 or above.

the only type of players that can stop him are guys that are also tall and can play very good perimeter defense. even though dirk has a high, awkward dribble he only puts down 2-3 times on a move so it is not terribly easy to rip him.

it also helps he flops for a good 6-8 points every game too.

I'm not from Houston, so maybe I don't share the total hatred for Dirk. I think he's actually fun to watch as long as it's not against my team. And yes, he flops like a fish out of water. That said, a guy who's 7 feet and can shoot lights out is tough to stop, period. He hasn't averaged his points all these years out of luck.

exactly, like the pistons did to KG monday ... if you want to stop a player, keep the ball out of his hands ... simple ... once they got the ball, the superstars are just too tough to stop

Dirk pwned KG badly in the playoffs a few years ago. KG doesn't make his team a winner like Dirk does.

KG also doesn't play on a team that good. I think KG doesn't do enough to help his team win, but its not a fair comparison given their supporting casts.
