I see this guy catch a lot a of hate on this and I understand that he won rookie of the year when a lot of people felt Yao should have won. That's fine, that's being a Rocket fan. But I personally will root for these guys who come from the upbringings they do. People feel that once these guys make it to the league their lives should be on the straight and narrow because they are making so much money, but money doesn't change people. Amare over came a rough up bringing, and a people predicted disaster for his career. The six high schools was obviously a red flag coming straight to the league. But he has had a very good career, and he has pretty much stayed out of trouble other than saying a few stupid things over the course of his career. I don't think it is funny that people make fun of his mother. And oh yeah, not only has he maintained to stay out of trouble, he has over come microfracture surgery. I am happy for him even though he is not a Rocket and I think it is a great story. I find it pretty laughable when people talk about his game as if it is a Steve Nash or all dunks. The guy has developed his skills and for you guys who say its all raw talent, I don't think you're paying close attention.
He is a pretty good player. I don't like his on-court personality, and I think he said some bad things about Houston and the Rockets, though. Can't root for him. I'll root for Steve Nash against the Lakers, but Lakers will win.
just like I'm shocked that you root for Ginobli, v-span, and every other white hope you're the absolute last person who should criticize
Are Aaron Brooks, Mike Harris or Von Wafer white? I forget...... But hey, at least you are the consistent one. And he is a great player, but only THIS year has he truly started playing hard on both ends of the court. He has been the typical "Entitled" vs "responsible" player up to this point. Let's hope he continues to grow. DD
Living in Phoenix, people support Amare as they player, but he is HUGE in the community. He rasies money for charity with a local rapper named Juice, and they go speak at schools, etc... Amare is a beast on the court, and if you want to call HIM a thug, what are the Denver Nuggets? What is Gilbert Arenas? That word doesn't work in the NBA. GTFO.
Agreed. I was disappointed with how he played in game 2, but he really showed a lot of heart coming back the way he did last night. I really think his Mother's problems may have affected him in game 2. I mentioned it then, and people blew it off with comments like "Amare's rich, he can buy her out of trouble" etc. But having family members with serious problems is no joke, and it can really bring you down. I have had experience with immediate family members with alcohol problems, and when it flares up, it takes a lot of time, energy, and patience to deal with. While Amare may come off as a bit arrogant, he has had a remarkably successful career given his hardships, and he really showed me something coming back last night after all the flak he's taken.
One other thing: Did you guys see the interview last night, Amare is wearing one contact lense in his right eye......I wonder if that is left over from the surgery last year to correct the torn retina. He is a tough guy, for sure. DD
I appreciate how Amare has developed his game tremendously as his career has progressed. I don't see how one cannot appreciate hard work and dedication. But I don't like him much at all. His comments, demeanor and selfishness turn me off.
Hah, his Birthday is May 18th, don't mess with my main man VY. You can't spell VictorY without a V and a Y. DD
Yeah I am not buying that premise about coming from a difficult background. Most of the elite NBA players nowadays have a difficult childhood that usually involves some sort of hardships growing up. Hell we all have difficult childhoods. It is all about how you deal with it. I am not diminishing what he has accomplished, but I just feel that almost everyone, especially in the NBA, has had some sort of the same hardship growing up. I will give him credit for developing an offensive game (thats how its done dwight "no skills" howard). You can really see his progress. On the defensive end though, he still is raw at best. There were plenty of times last night where he was still missing rotations and assignments. Having said all that, give me a player like luis scola over stoudemire any day of the week. You can teach hussle and making the extra effort. And to be honest, scola has a damn good offensive game that is just about equal to amare.
Ehh, lots of players in the NBA have a troubled background just like Amare. If background is your reason for rooting then you'd be rooting for half the league.
I rarely root for individual players. But when I do, it usually doesn't have much to do with things other than basketball. EDIT: I don't give him a pass on being a poor defender/rebounder and most people don't but no one seems to care about some of the other stars. I don't get why he's the only one who gets singled out for his defense. I literally LMAO every time I here Steve Nash start talking about how they need to pick up their defense.
What is with the extreme Scola homer-ism lately? You think he's just about equal to Amare offensively and someone else was saying he's got a post game that equals Kevin McHale. Both statements are ridiculous.
I root for Amar'e because I like his game, always attacking with quick dribbles and strong moves to the basket. He is the prototype for the modern big man's face up game. I love how hes developed that jump shot to make his game even harder to stop, cause when he's a threat to nail a foul line jumper it makes it all the easier for him to drive by his opponents. If only he rebounded and played D with as much tenacity as he attacks enemy big men. But, now they're using him and Robin Lopez as the anchors of their zone. That style suites his natural quickness, I saw him make a few deflections for turnovers in yesterdays game.
Stoudemire is the best offensive big man in the game. I was just as disappointed as many others on here at his lackluster first and second games but I think that yesterday he got back on track. The defense looked pretty helpless in stopping him and I love his game because he seems to be the ty pe of guy that gets going when he plays physical unlike some other players who disappear when things get hairy. Though my mind probably doesn't agree, my heart still says Phoenix. It was great seeing him extend their season.
Amar'e is a beast period. Don't give a **** what everybody on the board saying he is just a beast. He is 1000x better than Scola who gets 1000x more love from the people on the BBS, who talk bad about Amar'e's defense like he is some scrub. I would take him in a minute over Yao or Scola or Landry or any big man we have on the roster.
true.. just in the other Amare thread I said he was a great player with a good offensive game. I am also a Suns fan but you are right. There is something about Amare's attitude that just rubbed me the wrong way. I support him because he is on a team I like but if he leaves ehhh i wouldnt really miss him. I'm just rooting for Nash even though the Lakers will probably win in 6 or 5.
