Why doesn't Phil Jackson have a good coaching tree?

Because the Zen master artfully prunes his little bonzai.

I think it's because Phil's coaching success comes from managing personalities. Not so much Xs and Os.

His coaching style involves a complex offensive system which generally only works with a select roster of players. Also a great deal of his impact can be attributed to his people (ego) management skills which most believe cannot be learned.

Pop's philosophy relies heavily on defense and a humble culture. The defense part is easily transferable as it is effort based but I question the humble culture approach. There is already a luck factor in acquiring a superstar but getting one that fits your culture is even more difficult. I suspect that Pop would have looked to move a player like Kobe early in his career and might have even waived Andrew Bynum as a teenager.

Pop's disciples bring gritty defense to their new teams and have some immediate impact where as anyone who works for Phil that tries to implement his style fails due to personnel limitations.

Because all of his proteges (Rambis, Cleamons, Cartwright) took over terrible teams that for the most part were still terrible after they left, and none have gotten another head coaching gig since. Chicago did get better the next year under Skiles, but they also added Deng and Gordon through the draft and Hinrich, Chandler and Curry had gotten some time to develop.

He prefers a shoe tree that can hit 40% from Downtown.

He has publicly stated that he is not the best X's and O's guy out there. But he does manage teams incredibly well. Did our own GM Morey give our head coach praise when he called him a leader of men? Every NBA team budgets plenty of money to their coaching staffs. How frequent are very good X's and O's guys out there versus NBA coaches who can demand the respect of their players? Just saying.

Because his assistants couldn't coach Jordan or shaq.

I don't think the Triangle offense is seen as too transferable. Past coaches like Rambis failed to have any success with it, so its now probably seen as a detriment than as an advantage. Its part why Brian Shaw has always been highly regarded (for whatever reason) but never hired for a job, just can't trust the Triangle.

Like DD alluded to, it's Tex's triangle, not Phil's. The bottom line is it doesn't matter, Phil Jackson is still a good coach who continues to put himself in good situations.

If you could replace Phil Jackson with any coach past or present, who would be the most likely to repeat the same results? I have no clue to be honest. Pat Riley maybe? Red Auerbach? (Except he'd leave LA in a heart beat, regardless of Kobe+Shaq)

Phil Jackson's success comes from bull****ing players into thinking he is the zen master. He basically fools them into sublimating their egos. That type of ability to mindf**k players is either inborn or learned at a very early age.

Also, if Phil found someone with the ability, putting them on his staff would break his own spell - you can't have two "zen masters" in the same place at the same time in the same way that you can't have two Hitlers atop Germany at the same time, or two versions of Jim Jones leading the People's Temple.
