He more often than not gets there late, and then gets called for the blocking foul or shooting foul. And if even if he gets position, he's like always in that restricted area under the basket... Somehow we got to get him to start swatting shots way above the rim. Don't go for the charge! Go for the block, a la Mutombo! And then do some finger-wagging while he's at it...
Cause when he blocks a shot into the stands he gets called for a foul. This is the way he has been conditioned. If he jumps, its a foul, if he stands there its a foul. He probably thinks it's his best hope to take a charge. Sometimes at least its a no-call. I too wish he would just swat crap out of there, it would be so much simpler.
For a while he couldn't jump and block it without making contact. Now he's better, but still goes back to those old habits if he's not in good position for an angled block
He's screwed either way. He may as well clear out or just stay near our basket. What's the point of running all the way down the court and back so a ref can call a bs foul on you? He's gotten into foul trouble by trying to reach over for blocks. He's gotten fouls jumping straight up, standing straight up, taking the charge, and for not smiling enough. He's at the refs' mercy.
Did you really watch the play or reply? While he may be late in other plays, Yao definately was not late in that play. Stand still or jump, either way Yao is in trouble. Yao, and hence the Rockets for that matter, is going to be in the mercy of referees, as always.
Looked late to me. He was still moving when the contact was made. IN any case, yeah, Yao is probably screwed no matter what. But unless it's pretty obvious that he's going to be in position in time, I'd rather see him go for the block.
I rather think his inconsistentance on D side he had great o-game until that 2+1, but overall not good D
I really thought his breakout game would lead to some more respect out there. Yao is capable of physically dominating a game defensively if the refs didn't call it so damn tight. He could block 5 shots a game. Watch the finals from 2003. Duncan just denied everything at the basket all series long. And you know what? There was body contact on every single play. RJ and Kmart flying at him with full force, and he'd just go up and deny. They don't let Yao get away with that. If a guy is coming at him with a full head of speed, he can go up and block, but they will call a foul for body contact. I say if Devin Harris, KVH, Stackhouse want to go right at a 7'6" monster, then it is their fault for getting stuffed and humiliated. Stop bailing out these scrubs, refs. Let the big man play like a big man is supposed to.
So you guys think there's some sort of ref conspiracy against Yao? Sorry. He does get some BS fouls called on him, but he also needs to play the way the refs call the game, if that makes sense. If you're a 7 footer, they're not going to call charges when some forward comes into the lane and bumps into you, correct call or not. Play like a center - D up inside, deny post position, make your guy work for his shots. If you can block it, do so, but blocking your own man's shots is tough to do. Don't go for pump fakes, that's the easiest way to foul. Deny the lane to guards who try to drive by attempting to block the shot, not by putting your body in front to take charges. Guys who develop a rep as a shot blocker get away with contact more in the future. Yao should be able to block more shots at his height, imo, without fouling.
IIRC at the beginning of the season when Yao was also having foul troubles in a streak of games, everyone was saying he should not jump. But rather as a 7'6" he should just stand there, put his arms up and hold his position. Now people are saying he should jump to avoid the fouls. So should he jump or not jump?
That's the 64,000 dollar question. Everyone thinks he should do something different. This debate has gone on for most of the season. Bottom line, he needs to stop getting discouraged when they call fouls on his shotblocks and just keep shotblocking.
I watched Miami game right before the Rockets game, and the way Shaq is refereed, it's like a night and day...
I just want him to hurt somebody when the foul's called. At least then i know it was for something...
EXACTLY. Richard Jefferson jumped INTO Shaq withing the circle and Shaq stood his ground and there was no foul called. Dick Bavetta is a much better ref than those clowns last night. Yao should not get a foul called on him for standing ANYWHERE with his hands up in the air, he has a right to that position as well. The circle is a judgement call, and some refs view it as an absolute. They need to take away that stupid circle, it is killing the defense. DD
How many guys who is above 7 foot 4 can do the job as same as what yao do?? Yup, i know sometimes yao sucks but he is still learning the way of playing basketball in NBA. As you guys know, it is very different from the style of playing basketball in china. NBA is more aggressive more intense and the level is the highest in the world. Even if a guy who grows up in united state, who can ensure that he is better than yao. Yao has your advantage, that is , his height on the other hand, the height must bring some disadvantage to yao such as agility, stamina and so forth. Something it looks like very easy to do is hard for yao. How come is that? I think the answer is due to his height. Anyway, i just wanna say that you guys just give yao some confidence and credit. And i believe yao would eventually show something up! Im very pleased that yao can be one of roster of rox. Also im very glad to be one of rox fans.
Most of the time, Yao did foul on helping defense. The reason is that he couldn't beat the smaller players to the spot. If both of them go to the same position, the refs will always give the nod to offensive player in that situation. Yao should either go for the block, or get the hell out of the way.
Maybe wishful thinking on your part, there was no call make on that play was not because Dick Bavetta is a much better ref then those of the Rockets game 3 refs, it was because that was SHAQ. My guess is Dick Bavetta would've call a foul on that play if that was Yao instead of Shaq.
