I very rarely post here...but this is a question i have...I know the guy is streaky...but come on...hes still only 20 years old...think about how long it took a guy like jermaine o'neal to develop...trust me i know all about him hes from my home city...anyway...i don't think we should give up on Griff so soon...hes shown flashes of brillance, but at the same time i've seen stuff i haven't liked...but overall we made a commitment by trading away 3 1st rounders...we would look like idiots if we bailed so soon...cuz i guarantee you he'll be a good player...we just need patience
I agree with you to a certain point. You point out the fact that it took J. Oneal a few years to develop. This is because he couldnt get off the bench for 4 years. Eddie has been on the court more than Oneal did during a 4 year run. Therefore, Eddie's growth should be faster than Oneal's. It isnt. Compare Griffin's stats from last year to this year. Almost identical. Has there been an improvement in his shots? No, there is still no arch on his shot. Has he improved his ball handling? No. Is he a better defender? No. His game has stayed at the same level despite the fact that he has had the opportunity to play in games. Thats the concern.
Then again when Jermaine O'neal was with the TrailBlazers he did not get quite the minutes that Eddie Griffin gets now.
when jermaine o'neal was with blazers for 4 years, he never got off the bench. if griffin would stay at houston for a low price, we keep him. otherwise, he can go. let other team tries to tone down his 3-point shooting.
Because Eddie Griffin's progress has been steady and gradual rather than spectacular and meteoric, many of the board participants cannot see that progress. The Griffin is grabbing more boards and scoring inside -- look at the consistent double doubles he is now posting -- yet very few comprehend this. Trade. Trade. Trade. That is the mantra of new (and some seasoned) board members, many of whom are not really Rocket fans but merely Rocket followers. Eddie gained 15 pounds to start this season. With another 15 pounds of muscle at the start of next season he will come into his own at 6-11 and 250 lbs. If the traders achieve their trade wish, they will all be saying, "What are a poor trade! What was management thinking?" Few, if any, will admit to their "trade Eddie" outbursts, probably because they themselves will be gone.
Eddie looks to be like Darius Miles. Shows random flashes of brilliance, but hasn't improved at all in his time in the league. The same weaknesses he had going into the NBA, are still glaring weaknesses that kill the Rockets in a PF-heavy West Conference. Going with Eddie at PF, is like going to a gun fight with a Super Soaker.
Of course Griffin could be traded under only one condition! That condition would be if a vastly superior, young star was available and the Rockets were no longer patient about our future.
Griffin's shot is too flat to be anything but streaky. And to put more arch on his shots is going to require him to relearn how to shoot a basketball all over again. He's not good at putting the ball on the floor. So that leaves him with an inside only game. But for some reason, he stands out on the 3pt line - and as stated earlier - that is not his game. In this "system", he will only struggle to be streaky.
I say give the guy a break. He's still young and not everyone develops as fast as Steve or Yao. He's also had his flashes of brilliance every now and again. There's a reason the fans loved him so much last year. When was the last time the crowd chanted Steve's name or even Yao? He could have went number one in his draft if it wasn't for questions about his attitude. He'll be ok, look at some of the other guys in their second year. What about the "Baby Bulls" or Kwame Brown. I know it's hard to be patient, but it's not like we're going to win a ring this year so why should we trade him for the final piece that doesn't exist. We have the pieces, we just need them to take shape and figure out how they fit. BTW He does appear to be improving slightly. I think he might start breaking out next year.
I really like Eddie's game and keep reminding myself that he is still one of the 5 youngest guys in the league. Look at all the hype that's surrounded Darius Miles over the last few years, look at the stats, Griffin's are the same or better AND he's younger. That being said, I would only trade him in a deal for Brand, and that seems highly unlikely.
Rockets management loves EG. That (IMO) is why Kenny Thomas was traded and why EG is the starter in spite of MoT having more experience. If we are still having concerns about EG's progress at this time next year when he's old enough to legally drink...look for lots of trade deadline rumors.
To the people comparing O'Neal and EG: Eddie does recieve more playing time than Jjermaine ever did in Portland. But O'Neal had those 4 years to work on his body and he got to become acclimated to being a pro before he ever got to see the court. Playing behind Sabonis, Wallace, Cato, and others Jermaine got MUCH more experience in those years than Eddie has to this point. Have faith, Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will this team. If we can hold onto the playoffs and the team spends the summer preparing for next year, watch out.
These have been some real good points and posts. I would think its foolish to give up on EG at this point. He's 20 years old! The kid has a ton of talent and he's two years younger than Yao. We could really regret moving him in the future. I wouldn't count Kwame Brown out either or those Baby Bulls. Some may not pan out, but some will and that's why their teams haven't given up on them yet.
If EVERYBODY said trade EG, he'd already be gone. The Rockets phone has been ringing, and lots of the calls are about EG. However, I don't think you're going to see him move unless it's an offer the Rockets can't refuse.
