Why do the Rockets think Bosh, not another FA, is the right target?

We as fans post about Lebron to Houston, Wade to Houston, Ricky Rubio and Al Jefferson to Houston, Jordan and Olajuwon out of retirement to Houston. We hear about tweets and short spats in articles about Houston having "interest in _____."

But it seems the Rockets have only been targeting one big-name FA and one big-name FA alone for quite some time: Chris Bosh (unless this is some - elaborate smokescreen, twisted Morey magic). They have been quoted in meaning, "This is the season to all-in" and I'm sure they have written up a endless scenarios and calculated every last analytical metric.

So why then, Chris Bosh? Why not Lebron or Wade or whoever else? Particularly consider that the Rockets have had two good PFs in Scola and Landry last year and yet still organized this campaign. Ultimately, why is Bosh the best opportunity cost?

Some things that have been thrown around:

    - Big man security blanket in case Yao is not 100%.
    - Statistical evidence about the impact of long active players, like Pippen, Gasol, Odom, Garnett (if so, strange then that the Rockets usually go for undersized big men).
    - Statistical evidence about the Bosh's impact alone.
    - Work ethic and more cerebral of player.

Are these really better cost benefits than other big name pursuits?

Last Year: Brooks, Martin, Ariza, Scola, Yao
Is switching out Bosh for Scola really better than Lebron for Ariza or Wade for Ariza (moving Martin to SF)?

Open question. Hope some basketball gurus on the board can help describe why Bosh is the right formula and not someone else - thanks! If this has already analyzed, please lock.

Out of the Big 3 FAs, I think the Rockets have the best opportunity to land Chris Bosh.

The Rockets can only land these free agents through a sign and trade so the other team will be asking for players in return. Since the Rockets are stacked at the PF position it would make sense to land a player that will fill the void. Teams are going to be going after Scola, Hill, and maybe even PP. (imo)

Also, the Rockets just recently picked up Ariza and Martin at the 2 and 3 so I have a feeling that they are content at those positions. (for now)

It's simple - Bosh is the best combination of elite player, relatively easy to get here and adaptable to the current system.

LeBron and Wade are each in the top five players in the NBA and will be for the foreseeable future (Bosh is not). This means they know they can go almost anywhere, and even if they pass up the extra $30 million in a sign-and-trade, make up the money in endorsements in a heartbeat. Or they can sign a deal with a player option after year three, and feel extremely confident they can get the "full" max then because they're LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

Bosh is a great player, but he's not in that class. He's not a transcendent player that will make billions in endorsements, nor is he a guy that's a stone-cold lock to get $25 million/year for 5-6 years if he were to take lesser money with an early opt-out. Quite simply, Bosh needs a sign and trade more than any other elite player on the market, and that makes him far more accessible for Houston.

The other factor - LeBron and Wade, wherever they go (together or alone), they are your offense. Your other players play off of them, and they have the ball in their hands at all times. The Rockets have a good offensive scheme here with tons of playmakers, and Bosh is the perfect combination of an elite player who isn't going to disrupt the system they have in place. Part of his value is on defense... part of his value is in how he stretches the floor with his jumper, his offensive rebounding... etc., etc. He's easier to fit in with the current team. That's not to say the Rockets would turn down LBJ/Wade, of course... but consider it in the context of the above, and it adds up.

As far as Scola/Landry, they're certainly good players. But the primary MO of Daryl Morey, above all else, is that he goes for All-Star talent wherever he can find it. He's made that clear over and over again. Scola/Landry aren't that, and Bosh for a lot of reasons is the most accessible All-Star talent. That's why he's the guy.

You missed the biggest reason: Chris Bosh is the ONLY BIG FREE AGENT AVAILABLE.

Let's look at it this way. Morey can either go for

    Lebron: 0.001% chance
    Wade: 0.001% chance
Bosh: 5% chance, 0.001% if we don't make a pitch to him immediately because we're busy kissing Lebron/Wades asses.

I think it is ability and availability

LeBron and Wade are long shots. [3/4 of the court heave to the basket]
Bosh is a three pointer [more makable]

Boozer, Amare, every ones some are long two pointers
others are layups but they would be like layups worth only 1 point

    It is simple to explain

The possibility of landing Wade is 0,1%, why??? Because he will not leave Miami, and if he does, he goes to Chicago, via sign, we (Houston Rockets), can only sign Wade in a S&T, and if that happens, Miami will say that they are not interested, to oblige Wade to sign with them, the same happens with LBJ

Cavs said before they are not interested in a sign and trade, limiting LBJ possible teams, to Chicago, NJN, and Miami(teams with cap space), and getting all 26 other possible interested teams away, with no hope of landing him

Do you really think GOD MOREY doesn´t want LBJ/Wade??? NO, he does want them, but he knows that it is almost impossible to get them

But you ask, but is Bosh likely coming to Houston??? Probably not, but it is possible

And yes, Bosh is a huge upgrade to Scola

And no, Martin can´t slide to the SF position, he can´t even guard guys his size in the SG position, how could he guard guys like for example, LBJ???

The only possible thing Houston "Can" do is make Bosh commit to us as quick as possible, and then go to LBJ, and ask him if he wants to play with BOsh, and Yao, and make him try to convince the Cvas to S&T him (we have enough assets to make 2 S&Ts(plus draft picks) as I said in other treads), but even that it is almost impossible, because Cavs will say, no, we prefer letting you go, without getting any salaries back

I am not a b-ball guru, I just use my brain, and let my Hoston Heart, away from the process

Good post. Being a cerebral player, it would appear that Bosh would understand that Houston presents him with a great opportunity for the next 8 years with all their good/great role players.

Do you have an opinion why Bosh has shown so little interest in playing for the Rockets? After all, he gave Morey ALL of 20 minutes to present his case.

Morey being at Bosh's front doorstep at 12:01 has to have made an impression. Morey has also focused strictly on Bosh and that also has to have made Bosh re-think his original strategy as all the other teams have been jumping around between guys.

Look at Miami, instead of focusing on their guy first, Wade, now must sweat out a weekend with the possibility of having NO max salary guys.

To be the champs, you have to beat the champs and we NEED bosh to match up with Lakers frontline of Bynum, Gasol & Odom. Their size was the main reason they beat us in games 5 & 7 in the playoffs.

Bosh might only be listed as 6'10" but he is 6'11.5" in shoes which is true center height (too skinny to actually play center though).

Also, Bosh will fit in perfectly with the other rockets as he is a great mid range shooter while yao works in the low post.

We can try Melo. I think Melo is a better fit and a better player than Bosh.

Melo would be a pretty good option too from a basketball sense. In terms of lockerroom fit, Bosh may not be ideal but closer to what the Rockets would be looking for.
