I've always wondered this. Last week they were saying how Kobe was being shipped to Detroit but he had the veto. Then they have that Chicago deal that also didn't go through. As far as I know, nobody really knew about the Detroit deal, as far as the general public is concerned, until the media announced it.

Someone from another thread mentioned how this could be bad for the players that found out they were gonna be shipped. I just don't see any positives coming from such an announcement. Disgruntled players is the last thing you'd want on your team.

the media makes money... you go to their website/channel whatever to see whats up and they make money from the ads.
gets people talking about the NBA creates a buzz...

basically it's a type of marketing ploy

Trades that fall through are nothing more than rumors. In the NBA, trade rumors are a lot of what makes the media relevant.

How is it supposed to get out to the general public if it isn't announced by the media?

Yes, there have been some trades leaked on this BBS over the years, but I view that as exceptions rather than the general nature of things of that sort.

The only benefit I see is if teams want to please fans by proving they've at least tried to make a move. It's not totally the same, but this past summer Orlando made it well known which coaches they were going after, specifically Billy Donovan from Florida, to drum up season-ticket holder sales even though nothing was close to being confirmed.

Or in this case, which is more personal, Buss is trying to show that he's trying to move Kobe, yet Kobe is the one that is the one deciding not to budge despite his what he's said in the past. Detroit is just a casualty of that drama. But it's all speculation on my part.

if i were a gm, i would plant fake trade rumors to create a market for my player. even if they are unfounded and the other team denies offering such a deal, naming players sets a value for the player and reiterates that they are on the trading block. maybe not in kobe's situation, because everybody knows and probably has already made their best offer.

its kind of like scott boras saying that arod is seeking a '$350 million contract' just to establish a bidding guideline.

So technically if we want to, the Rockets can just make a deal with Tmac, Yao, Batt, or whoever and tell them to go along with a trade rumor to mess a team up? For example, if we want to mess up Dallas, just start a rumor that Dirk plus change was gonna get traded for Yao so that'll effect a disgruntled Dirk's game. It's never gonna happen, but sounds like it could be an option if the Patriots' higher ups are in charge of us.
