Like seriously why don’t teams just teach one of the third string lineman to long snap or find a guy that can play OL and long snap? It is ridiculous to me that there is so much competition for roster spots and each spot is so valuable that teams still accept the fact that LS is going to take one of your 53 roster spots... I get that LS is an important job but you would think that some smart coach out there would try and find a guy that can do that and something else for the team.
There have been guys that perform dual roles for teams, but the reason teams have dedicated long snappers is the same reason teams have dedicated kickers and punters. Although both involve kicking the ball, they are each their own specialized skill. Same thing with long snapping. It's a specialized skill and it's not so easy to just train some guy to do it. Colleges recruit guys who just long snap. NFL signs guys who just long snap.
It's a real skill. My brother was a college kicker/punter. He an that LS were best friends. The good ones can land it with the laces in the right position.
