Why is a blow job more important than this? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54385-2004Jan27.html . . . The commission, which has been hampered by obstacles since its creation in late 2002, announced yesterday that it will publicly press for a two-month extension of its statutory deadline, May 27. Any extension, which must be approved by Congress and the White House, would push the commission's work further into the presidential campaign. The White House and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) have said they would oppose any extension. But Kristen Breitweiser, widow of World Trade Center victim Ronald Breitweiser, said she hopes the appeal from the commission will changes their minds. . . .
Blocking investigations into the single greatest terrorist attack on American soil and capitalizing on the aftermath is scary. That Americans aren't demanding answers is scarier.
The simple answer: Because it's politically expedient for them to do so, and thats more important to them than for us to find out the truth.
Yeah, why would anyone be against finding out the whole truth ? Doesn't finding out exactly what went wrong and where the mistakes were made make our country safer??
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationw...8jan28,1,2388357.story?coll=la-home-headlines . . . Even in the months leading up to the strikes on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon, with the U.S. intelligence community in a state of near panic that an Al Qaeda attack was imminent, aviation officials did little to step up security or tighten screening procedures, the panel said in a preliminary report Tuesday. . . . Some said the FBI and other intelligence agencies downplayed the few reports that had surfaced in the 1990s suggesting terrorists might hijack planes and use aircraft as missiles against targets on the ground. Others said they were unaware of those intelligence reports, and said they never even considered the possibility of such an attack. "The notion of a fully fledged member of Al Qaeda being a pilot ... did not occur to me," said Cathal Flynn, former associate administrator of civil aviation security at the FAA. "That's my regret — [that we] didn't get more people thinking about how they would do this." But the commission pointed to a series of breakdowns, missed opportunities and questionable policies. Even after at least two of the hijackers were placed on terrorist watch lists weeks before the attacks, their names were not provided to the FAA — and therefore did not show up on "no-fly" lists that would have prevented them from boarding. The panel on Tuesday formally asked Congress for a two-month extension, which would move the May 27 deadline for its report to the end of July. Commission members have said they need extra time to continue their investigation and schedule additional hearings. The commission was formed to produce a comprehensive report on government failures leading up to Sept. 11. The White House and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) have signaled their objections to such an extension, which would move the release of the commission's report — and any embarrassing disclosures — closer to the Nov. 2 presidential election. . . . The Bushies had nine months and a blueprint from the Clinton adminstration to take out Al Qaeda and did nothing except deemphasize terrorism and talk a lot more about missile defense.
Maybe it's the possibility of impeachment? http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion...jan27,1,2870082.column?coll=la-home-utilities January 27, 2004 E-mail story Print Robert Scheer: Baghdad Is Bush's Blue Dress Now, can we talk of impeachment? The rueful admission by former chief U.S. weapons inspector David Kay that Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction or the means to create them at the time of the U.S. invasion confirms the fact that the Bush administration is complicit in arguably the greatest scandal in U.S. history. It's only because the Republicans control both houses of Congress that we hear no calls for a broad-ranging investigation of the type that led to the discovery of Monica Lewinsky's infamous blue dress. In no previous instance of presidential malfeasance was so much at stake, both in preserving constitutional safeguards and national security. This egregious deception in leading us to war on phony intelligence overshadows those scandals based on greed, such as Teapot Dome during the Harding administration, or those aimed at political opponents, such as Watergate. And the White House continues to dig itself deeper into a hole by denying reality even as its lieutenants one by one find the courage to speak the truth. . . .
The GOP is desperate. They have to hold the House, Senate, and Presidency. Loss of any one of the three will lead to real investigations and, based on their behavior, one must assume embarrasment at least.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0128/p02s01-uspo.html . . . So far, no heads have rolled for the intelligence and security lapses that may have opened the door to terrorists slamming jetliners into buildings on Sept. 11, 2001. No smoking guns and - as yet - no defining moments. But the facts emerging for the first time from the commission this week challenge widely held assumptions about 9/11, especially the view that the attackers entered the country legally and violated no laws while they were here . . . "The idea that they all came in clean and nothing could be done about it is a false idea," said former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D) of Nebraska, one of 10 commissioners and currently president of New School University in New York. Other commissioners questioned why so few US officials have been penalized for the intelligence failures leading up to 9/11. . . .
Most of what we think we know about the Sept 11 hijackers is either false or hypothesis. Example: Urban legend has it that the terrorists smuggled box cutters aboard in their luggage or pockets...but we don't know that at all...I think one flight attendant may have speculated that they had box cutters, but I don't think its been proven; and we have NO idea how they got there (were they planted? smuggled? etc.), How the F are we going to make our air travel security system better if we don't know how it broke down in the first place? And why won't Bush and the Republicans in congress let us know why? There is nothing political or partisan about wanting to know that. By implication, it may have the effect of making them look not as good for being in charge when it happened, but is that worth the price of your or my safety? Absolutely absurd.
Great points. Most of what we think we know about Sept. 11 is pure BS. A thorough, public investigation will clear up any misconceptions about what happened and help us understand what our true security issues are.
I'm curious too, I mean, there has to be a good reason they don't want this investigation to finish. A very good patriotic reason.
Whatever, Maybe there is nothing there to find, and maybe they realize that you can NEVER be 100% safe. It is more prudent to move on..... And, I agree that "A blow job" was unimportant in the big scheme of things too. DD
C'mon DD. You've got to realize that where there's smoke, there's fire-related program activities. (I can't take credit for that.)
So let me get this straight... 9-11 was, according to many, the biggest disaster in US history. It was important enough to invade two countries, one of which had virtually no actual connection, but proponents claim there is a symbolic connection which 9-11's vast significance justifies. It is important enough to ( theoretically) commit billions upon billions, and years upon years as a means of either vindicating those lost or preventing something similar from happening in the future. But when it comes to checking out how it actually happened, so as to properly assess blame and help with prevention, those advocating the former defend impeding the latter on the grounds that 'we can never be truly safe' and ' it is more prudent to move on'? One question: Are you serious?
Come on, I know this is not nice to say, but this is unbelievably idiotic, and seems to be not based on any logical or rational thought whatsoever. "Maybe there is nothing to find" OK, unless 4 planes randomly flew into the Pentagon, the WTC, and PA at the same time on the same day, I'm pretty damn sure that there's something to find. The big black hole down the street from me gives me some indication that there's likely something to find. "you can NEVER be 100% safe" Of course you can't. So does that mean you shouldn't try to be safer? Of course not. Do you wear your seatbelt in a car on the highway? Why bother, seatbelts don't have a 100% success rate. Why bother wiping out terrorists if we can never be 100% safe from them, etc. etc. etc. "It is more prudent to move on....." If by "prudent" you mean "careless" or any word that is antithetical to prudent, than that is correct. OK, so 2-3000 people are intentionally killed, we are not really sure how or why, but we should just move on and hope for the best. How are you supposed to fix a problem you don't understand? You're a computer programmer or something, right? When a program you are working on crashes, do you go back to see what the problem was or do you just decide to fix it without bothering? Come on, you could not be serious with that post.
Certainly the Bush administration would have us "move on." There are some very serious questions that need to be answered, but before that can happen, they must be asked. The answers would bring down this administration and, to a lesser extent, yes, tarnish the preceding administration more than a blow job ever could ever tarnish a blue dress. But the blame would fall fairly squarely on George W. Bush, Cheney, Richard Perle, Tommy Franks, Condi Rice, George Tenet, etc. 9/11/01 did not just "happen". There were many indicators and warnings, some of them received in the forms of memorandums and such during the summer of 2001 from the governments of Israel, Egypt, and Russia.
Translation: I like my tax cuts and don't want Bush to lose the election. I don't care how many people die as long as I get to hold on to my sweet change.
Nah, I don't mind an investigation into the whys and wherefores, but when it becomes a partisan politcs game, I think it is time to move on.... DD
