I've been noticing this a lot lately. A lot of times, when someone is ordering food from my place and say they want mozzarella on it, they refer to it as "fresh mozzarella". Noone ever says they want "fresh american" or "fresh cheddar", just "fresh mozzarella". For that matter, how can cheese be fresh? do they mean they want the just opened mozzarella from the packaging? Cuz no restaurant is going to open up a brand new mozzarella package just for you when you ask for "fresh mozzarella". Even high end restaurant is not going to do that. and even if they do, the mozzarella is still not fresh, I mean it's cheese, it has to be held over for a while before it can be considered cheese. Anyone else notice the "fresh mozzarella" thing?
I did not know this. off to wikipedia I go. are there actually restaurants that do this at their premises?
Mozzarella doesn't need to age, although you can--and it's yummy. Fresh can be done in 30 minutes. So, you probably should be saying you don't have fresh mozzarella.
ah once again Wikipedia enlightens me. I actually have had fresh mozzarella at high end italian places before. Why would a sandwich place make fresh mozzarella though? the fresh stuff is almost like avocado in its consistency. I'd imagine that would be a real mess to put in a panini press.
I often tell them that our mozzarella is the sliced one, and they all just say ok thats fine too. I honestly never thought they were referring to any other kind.
this is actually kind of accurrate in my opinion. fresh mozzarella is a little komre "meaty" in its consistency than silken tofu though
I had a craving for mozzarella all week last week so struck up the conversation with quite a few people, some casual acquaintances (btw I spelled that correctly without using google, self high-five), and some friends. I was asking them about cheap mozzarella options since I didn't want to spend too much and everyone's first response was "the grocery store is great, but you know what's wrong with it" or "They got good prices but you know the kind of people go there" etc. They always stare at me with a cockeyed look when they say it (you know the look, it's something racist but they dont wanna come out and say it so they just give you that look...I can't describe it, I just know it when I see it). When they do eventually come out and say it, it's always referring to how they see so many black people shopping at the grocery store. Is this like a real phenomenon or something? I haven't stepped into a grocery store in like 2 decades so it has been a while. I've heard the jokes in the past but always thought it was done for effect by black comedians. However, with so many real world people saying the same thing, I'm wondering if this is a real thing, and if it is, why do black people like mozzarella?
