Why do people insist that benching Alston was wrong?

I am on ESPN right now and I'm reading numerous articles on how apparently Stan Van Gundy was wrong for benching Alston and playing Nelson for the 4th quarter and the Overtime. I'm pretty sure I saw Alston brick most of his shots in the 3rd and turn the ball over a lot. And Nelson was making critical passes to get them back into the game during 4th quarter crunchtime.

    Article by Broussard:

And on the Magic forums you can see fans unhappy that Nelson was playing the bulk of the minutes. Are people blind to the inefficiency of Alston in that second half? Or are they just riding his Game 3 wave?

I don't think anyone could make a sound argument against the fact that Nelson is a better player than Rafer. However, I don't think it's a good idea to seriously screw with your rotation during the Finals. I mean, yeah Rafer is Rafer, but they were winning with him at PG and he does do a better job of setting up the offense than Jameer right now. Is Jameer a better shooter and finisher? Yes. But stick with what is working and what your team is used to.

Also, Nelson totally screwed up on the Fisher 3 pointer by giving him space to set and shoot that 3.

I'm sure from your perspective that any pt guard is better than Rafer.

What is that supposed to mean?

I am arguing that Rafer should have been playing. But yeah, go ahead and tell me 5 starting point guards in the NBA who are worse than Rafer

Cuz he's relying on a PG that's been out for 4 months over the PG that's helped them get to where they are now. Rafer had a bad 3rd quarter no doubt but i've seen him bounce back and overall he was playing well.

I also think Fisher would not have gotten as open of a look on his 3's.

It's not as horrible a decision as people make it out to be though. They lost the game cause of there missed free throws, not cause Nelson was playing over Rafer. Nelson was playing pretty well and SVG went with his gut feeling. They had the game if Dwight just made one free throw.

That's weird, given that he had 1 turnover the whole game.

Rafer and A.J. were good enough to beat philly, boston and cleveland, but not LA?

everyone in orlando including me is questioning nelson playing in the 4th and OT

its not like rafer was having a horrible game...he was having a solid game while nelson wasn't really doing anything which is why everyone was questioning it...nelson was scared to shoot the ball...

Rafer also is taller then nelson and would of been up on fisher to make it tough to shoot

Also, Rafer should of ended the game. Nelson should have watched.

Rafer is the better defender, also I thought they should have fouled in the 4th qt.

There is no excuse for Jameer not stepping up on Fisher, like a 2 pointer will hurt you at that point.

But at the end of the day if Dwight and Hedo make their free throws they win.
