i mean, the guy liberated his people. he didn't start any war. he didn't really do anything that bad. and most of his people didn't suffer much. i don't get the whole anti castro thing going on. bush is like happy cause he is dying? i think that's completely out of the line. bush caused more problems than castro ever did. thoughts?

Castro did sort of threaten us with nuclear missiles.

Regardless, I do agree that if Bush said he was happy Castro is dying, his comments were rude.

It's undiplomatic and beneath the President of the U.S. to take joy in someone's pending death. If it was Hitler, I would make an exception, but it ain't.

He sounded like Ahmedinijad when he said that; he stooped to his level, IMO...

What's ironic is that the US created Castro as an enemy, and instigated the Cuban Missile crisis.

All we did was constantly try and set up a puppet govt there using any dirty tactics at our disposal. We sent him right into the arms of the Soviets, who shipped over the missiles to deter another US military takeover attempt (Bay of Pigs). We would have tried again too.

Iran the Axis of Evil nation was also created by US policy (a puppet govt post WW2). Much of the Middle East was lorded over by Western countries for decades, and surprise, surprise they were staunchly anti-West afterwards.

the current Iranian gov't overthrew the US puppet gov't about 20 years ago. Iran the Axis of Evil nation is ruled by hardliners that support hizbollah

And the UN had more to do with it than just the US (borders)

My mother is a recently retired high school teacher. She made a point once that once the students started having lived most of their lives in the post-Soviet world, they just didn't get it. Often students would say things like the cold war was all the USA's fault and if we would have just been nice to Stalin we could have all been happy.

I'm thinking this is another instance of the same thing. Castro was a very, very angry and dangerous man, not some Hispanic Santa Claus paternal figure. Some people will argue that Castro's cruelties and ruthlessness were necessary, and I don't really want to argue that point because it is a nuanced discussion and can cloud the greater picture, but Castro is not and never was a nice man.

the revolution, in Cuba, died when castro appointed himself as master of all. But what he did to liberate the people from Batista and the mafia, will be something that will live on forever :)

yuantian, things are changing now, for the better....In chile, the president is a woman, whose father was tortured by pinochet. In Nicaragua, a man that was considered a terrorist, for defending the poor from Somoza, is now president. In argentina, Kirchner is hunting down the people responsible for the dirty wars. ( isabela is 500000 years old and there is an order for her arrest)

those that hate castro should open a book and see why revolutions had to take place. what bush said is horrible, considering that his father played a huge role in the holocaust of latin america :(

The US needs to allow US tourism to Cuba so we can put money in the hands of the Cuban people ~ only then will Castro's or his successor's reign end.
