Why do most prescriptions for fixing the Rockets seem to focus on offense?

Rockets are 8th in the league in offensive efficiency. 107.0 O
Rockets are 24th in the league in defensive efficiency. 108.8

In 2015, Rockets were 12th in offensive efficiency. 107.0
    8th in Defensive efficiency 103.4

    Play harder.

Yup. Offense can always come and go but if you compete consistently on the defensive side, you always give yourself a good chance to win

But that's just it - the offense is doing the same things it did last year -> while leaguewide, offense has declined.

It didn't come or go, it has stayed the same. Defense went.

very puzzling how a lineup with 4 defensive players in DH, CC, TA, and PB could result in being one of the worst teams in the league defensively.

Its not puzzling at all to anyone who actually knows what they are looking at.

TA, CC and PB have not been good defenders this year.

DH has still been good, but not the elite level he has been in the past.

I miss JVG. Like I REALLY...really miss JVG.

And Rick. with losing Rick we lost Lowry. Why in the hell we cold shouldered these 2 out the door I will never understand.

defense, unlike offense, is FIRST about willingness, effort and determination. techniques, scheme, etc. come in SECOND. and it's more of a team thing. harder to gauge individually w/ just stats, too.

well puzzling in the sense that they should be better than that collectively. But yes all of these guys have not been able to hold their own defensively this year. I knew PB's defense regressed the minute he became the starter. It gradually became worse year by year. TA this year I did not expect. I'm not sure if its more of an age factor or if he just isn't as motivated to be locked in as much as before. CC is still very much learning so his inconsistency isn't much of a surprise.

    That lineup

107.0 offensively (same as team overall)

100.0 defensively (way better overall than rest of team)

It should be better though - this lineup probably gets lots of hack-as though which probably disrupts everythign.

but at the same time the players could be doing a piss poor job of executing what the coaches are telling them to do on the defensive side. Its the same staff as last year to go along with the same players. It works both ways and if they're aren't on the same page this happens.

Because it is pretty OBVIOUS you need to play better defense and give more effort.

No one is arguing that you don't need to play better D - that is a given.

doesn't seem too obvious judging by the amount of topics/post around here. The majority all seem to criticize the team and JH's help offensively without evening mentioning defense as the #1 problem.

The scheme is terrible though. No commitment to transition defense. No defensive rebounding. You took the defensive coordinator and gave him more responsibility without hiring someone to supplement him. JB is obviously spread too thin. He cant motivate (effort/willingness).

3 good defenders in the starting lineup yet we're terrible at it.

Because people only look at stats, those are the same people that say Harden played well because he got 25 points, ignoring that Eric Gordon went off for 30 on him the same game.

We had the same coaching staff last year.

Either the players suddenly declined physically this season, or more likely, they don't have the same level of effort and focus.

I am not defending the coaching. It has been underwhelming to say the least. But why do people keep on blaming the coach when we had the same coaching staff in both seasons but the results are vastly different?

i agree, our scheme is indeed terrible. no transition d, and switching on literally everything all the time for no apparent reasons.

some say harden is the hole on d and that caused a chain reaction. that argument may hold some water, but i think there must be sth. more than that.
