Why didn't we go after Rodney Rodgers?

I saw this guy's only making $1 million this year. The Rockets certainly could have afforded him, and he'd be a perfect fit with this team. He's young, shoots the 3 as well as anyone, can post up, and can play the 3 or the 4. I know it's hindsight, but I'm just curious. Any FAs like him out there this year that we could steal for just $1 million?

If I remember correctly, the Rockets did go after him. I think I read he was their top free agent target at the beginning of the offseason last year. It's just he was the guy who on the first day of free agent signings signed with Phoenix before giving other teams a chance. It's hard to tell if there is anyone like him this year. He had never played this well before this year, and it would have been very hard to predict that he would do what he's done. Same with this year. One player I can think of that might can fill that role this offseason is Austin Croshere. He can play the 3 or 4, post up, shoot the 3, and do a lot. However, I may be wrong, but it would probably take more than the exception to land him. Still, he is probably the cheapest player that might resemble Rogers the most in this years free agent crop.

The Cat is right, the Rockets wanted him to back up Pippen, but Rogers chose the Suns instead.

Um...you need to watch Clipper games more closely because this season isn't even Rodney Rogers' best season. He's been doing it for years. So this season should not be a surprise.

Yeah, I admit I haven't seen a number of Clippers games. It's just the few times I had seen him, he didn't play that well, and if I'm correct he only averaged 7 points a game last season. So about midseason when he broke out, it just seemed like a surprise to me because I hadn't seen him do it before.

If I remember the highlights, he scored 9 points in the last 20 seconds to win one game, by hitting a 3, getting a steal, hitting a 3, another steal, and a final 3...it was at least 5 years ago though.

Thanks for the info. I guess I wasn't aware of that. Austin Croshere would be a nice fit. Don't know how much he'll command, though, or if he would sign here. Hope so.

Actually hes played liked this his whole career the only difference was after his rookie year he was starting so a starter putting up numbers like that is a dime a dozen. As far as his latter years in the Clip joint its pretty damn hard to get motivated to play when you aren't making that much money and your on a REALLY bad team. As far as I can remember it was Houston turning him down because they wanted Shandon. It was Rodgers who seeked Htown and then Htown kept him waiting just in case Shandon wouldn't come but he didn't want to wait for Shandon's decision, which I understand. So it was Houston who didn't want him, and really we didn't need him where would we put him and even if we did have the room he would be a temporary fix as he is not that young and his game has improved to the max.

I think Rodney Rogers' FA value was limited by the fact that he does not play D (which make him a perfect fit for Phoenix [IMG]) and that he only put up average numbers as a starter for an awful team.

I also remember that Shandon was the Rock's top FA target and Rogers was only a possibility if SA did not sign.

The way I remember -- and it is a little fuzzy -- Rodney Rogers was our top FA target. When he signed with Phoenix, we turned our attention to Anderson. I think he'd have taken our mid-level and we wouldn't have gotten Anderson if we got Rogers. If we couldn't have them both, I think Anderson is the better choice anyhow, but it would have been nice to have gotten them both.
