Why didn't the Rockets trade KT to Philly for a draft pick?

Essentially this was a 3 way trade, with Philly getting KT, Denver getting a first round draft pick, and Houston getting Posey, but why didn't Houston just do a direct swap with Philly? Wouldn't an extra first round draft pick be better that Posey, who'll be gone at the end of the season anyway?

Why will Posey be gone at the end of the season?

Because for the millionth time, James Posey is a very good player.

    1. The Philly draft choice will be a mediocre one
    2. They don't have to give it up til 2005 (do we want to still be developing rookies 3 years from now)
    3. The pick will most likely range between 17-22 which is exactly where Posey (19th) and Thomas (22nd) were picked. So we would be drafting a similiar type player who may or may not be as good as the one we got except we would have to wait for another 3 years for him to arrive and 3 more years to get to where these players currently are.

Don't confuse Rudy's hesitance to play as a sign that he's not good. James Posey is very good.

Simple! The Rockets are already a very young team. They have enough talents to build a championship team (maybe). They need the time to gel before adding another new member, especially another rookie.

Regardless of what you think of Posey (I happen to like him alot), Houston couldn't have traded Thomas to Philly for just a draft pick. Philly and Houston are both over the cap, so the salaries exchanged had to be within 15% of each other. Draft picks count zero dollars for the purpose of a trade, so Philly would have been giving up no salary and taking back Kenny's $1M + salary. You can't do that.

The Rockets have Posey's Bird Rights why would they lose him at the end of the year? If the Rockets want him they'll get him because they can pay him anything he wants, and I'm guessing Posey would love to play for a young, upcoming, playoff caliber team near where he lives and where he plays a significant role. Why would we trade KT for a pick in the 20s? Posey is still learning the playbook he'll play.

The Rockets have a team option on Posey for next season. They don't need to negotiate anything in order to keep him. If the Rockets want him, Posey is theirs until the end of the 03-04 season.

I'm glad you said that crash because I meant option not Bird Rights, though they will have that at the end of next year. It was stated several times during the trade that Posey is a restricted free agent.

I thought Posey was a restricted free agent, like Marc Jackson was. He can shop around and the Rockets can match, if any offers?

If so, he might get an offer the Rockets would not be willing to match. Especially since we have Rice one more season and TMo. I'm sure Hawk would also resign cheap.

If Posey wasn't here next season, it wouldn't be that big a deal. Afterall, TMo would have another year of development under his belt and Hawk is great, IMO. It would be nice to keep him but it ain't a show stopper.

Why wouldn't the Rockets match it? They're over the cap so it's not like it would effect the cap. The Rockets need a young, athletic, defensive minded SF with offensive skills and long arms to disrupt opposing offenses. A guy who you can throw on the Kobes and Finleys and Allens and Christies of the world . The Rockets have that guy at a young age and he is proven, so why not match and offer? If another team is willing to offer him big bucks (like Minnesota did with Ricky Davis), then that means he's a hot commodity meaning that the Rockets will likely match, and if he doesn't work out Posey would have trade value. I'm guessing though Posey will re-sign with the Rocks for at least one year and then use his Bird Rights.
