Why aren't the Spurs being discussed as a contender for Dwight Howard?

    Consider the following:

    1. They have the cap room to sign him (or any other big money free agent), as long as they waive Matt Bonner and let free agents Splitter and Ginobili go. At this stage of his career, Manu is a role player and they got the likes of Danny Green who can do his job. Alternatively, Manu might be re-signed at a lower cost and other moves can be made to clear space.

    2. They are an elite team, with Parker and Duncan still playing at an elite level.

    3. No state income tax in Texas.

    4. Great coach with multiple rings.

    5. Great front office who has shown an ability to find players to surround their stars and fit what the team is trying to accomplish (George Hill, Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Matt Bonner, Boris Diaw).

    6. Unlike Kobe, Duncan has shown a willingness to cede shots and the limelight to younger teammates (like David Robinson did for a young Tim Duncan). The franchise has a culture of unselfishness. Dwight's been allergic to the "following Shaq's footstep" thing. Maybe following Tim Duncan's footstep would appeal to him.

Of course, the Spurs are sneaky and rarely air their intention to the media. So, the lack of discussions about their free agency ambitions doesn't mean they don't have something huge planned.

Probably because Dwight doesn't want to play or live in San Antonio.

Why don't 30% of Clutchfans members give a damn about where Dwight Howard goes?

At some point (very, very soon), Duncan is going to break down. Parker is on the wrong side of 30 now as well, and letting Ginobili and Splitter go is going to affect their depth. Popovich has also said that he's going to hang it up at the same time as Duncan, which is probably going to be within the next 2-3 seasons. Why would Dwight commit long-term to a franchise that is facing that kind of rebuild?

If the Spurs win the championship this year, I assume Duncan and Pops retire.

If they don't, and neither retire, and then the Spurs go on to waive Bonner and Manu, and sign Dwight, can they win next year? Seems more likely than the Rockets winning, but consider Manu is key to their depth. Check the guy's +/- in the playoffs. The guy is just conducive to winning basketball, even noting he has a diminished role/stats as he's gotten older. Then consider the Dwight/Duncan combo. Could it work? Absolutely. Duncan/DRob obviously worked... but you get the feeling with Dwight, it wouldn't be that easy. For the same reason if you got Dwight in Houston you'd rather pair him with a lankier more athletic 4 than with Asik, you'd probably want to do the same in San Antonio. That said, as with an Asik pairing, the defense and rebounding potential, especially down the stretch of a tight game, is awesome.

However, even with all the above, even if they do win a championship next year with that squad, you then have to assume that Duncan and Pops retire after that season.

Basically, I'm calling Duncan/Pops retiring after their next championship, whenever that is, and short of that, in the next couple years anyway.

And finally, yes, they have had their share of bumps and bruises the last 5 years, but you could also clarify them as "relatively" healthy. They havent' had anything like Yao/TMac, or OKC losing Westbrook this year (I know Manu was out a couple years back, but he's their 3rd best player), or the Bulls losing Rose. Granted, the injury risk is there for all teams. If any team loses one of their superstars, they are likely out of the running, but consider if that happens to the Spurs one year, given their ages, that may be their last go. If Dwight joins the Rockets, and Harden has an abnormal freak ankle thing in the playoffs next year, there are still 4+ more years of potential championship runs moving forward.

    Finally, it's San Antonio.

serious question for you....... If by some miracle the Rockets sign Dwight Howard as a free agent, are you going to get off Morey's ass?

That will mean the Rockets added: Howard, Harden, Asik, Parsons, Lin and Jones in less that 25 months.

I am not picking on you, I really am curious.

Sure, Howard would make up for Morey's mistakes.

He took a risk on Terrence Williams. All it cost us was one low pick in one of the worst drafts. Said rookie's guaranteed salary might have hurt us during free agency.

Drafting Patterson was a mistake we can all agree to. He was never destined to be anything more than a role player with poor rebounding. Morey should have went with Sanders, but Patterson was the safer pick. His offensive game was much more polished.

He drafted Morris over Leonard, which again was the safe bet. Mook was the Big 12 Player of the Year while Leonard's game was considered shaky by most. Finally, he took D-Mo (who he thought might be the answer at center one day) over another undersized PF, Kenneth Faried. Faried was passed up by many teams in the NBA because he was undersized, and they didn't see him finding a way to score in the NBA. His size did not limit him, and he turned out to be great. I'm still not writing D-Mo off.

White at 14 was a no-brainer at the time. He was a very unique player who could do a little of everything. For a player his size, you hope just one thing sticks and he becomes great at it. We needed to take a risk with one of the picks and why not make it our highest pick where the success rate of drafting a star is a bit higher?

Now, consider what Morey has done with what he's been given. I can count all of his mistakes on one hand. I think he's a great GM who takes calculated risks. I don't see why he needs to sign Dwight Howard after trading for Harden to make up to you for his mistakes.

light years better than CD could ever dream of being.

His mistakes can be counted on one hand and his value investing approach is top notch.

He traded pawns (Morris and PPat) for a knight (T-Rob) and could flip that knight into a rook with EASE.

Even if DH doesn't come to Houston....you cant front on DM with a straight face.

Howard has terrible basketball IQ, thus not a Spurs player.

Why would the Spurs want Howard after the way Duncan dominated and schooled him in that series

Because a duncan and howard duo would be the best frontcourt in the nba for the next two years. Then duncan will be 40 and he might finally be too old.

Why would dwight want san antonio? Because its either that or houston if he wants to leave, and in the eyes of the rest of the country houston is about the same.

Because they will not let Ginoboli and Splitter go for the chance of signing Howard
