When it comes to flopping. I have a lot of friends that criticize the NBA for being non-strict on potential flops in the NBA. However... when Scola or Lowry flops... my friends just cheer and credit them with their excellent defense. Now, I'm not talking about Scola or Lowry drawing a legit textbook charge, I'm talking about them flopping over and forcing the referee to call a foul. So, I just want to know. Are any of you guys like this? Where you condone the Rockets flopping, but get pissed off every time the opponent flops? Or are you one of those fans who enjoy flopping, and love grown men flailing their arms around and whining like little girls.
I feel so low as a Rockets fan, when my friends are shouting death threats at the damn TV when the Lakers come into town and Pau Gasol turns into a headless chicken. But when Scola flies into the stands, he receives a standing ovation. LOL.
I get irritated with it when Scola flops. Most of the time Kyle just takes contact and embellishes, but when he flops I get irritated as well. So yeah I hate it both ways. I have no problem with a player getting position, taking contact and falling back to show that contact... I have a huge issue with people feeling a touch and shooting off that touch like they were hit with a buckshot.
Scola doesn't really flop, he milks fouls that have been committed. Flopping is what AK47 does, falling to the ground when there's no contact.
Honestly, the rockets-colored glasses do a lot for perception. I try to be objective, and will admit that a lot of Scola's charges taken are flops...but many times, it looks like a legitimate call to me, when a fan of the other team sees it as a blatant flop...and of course, it goes both ways. We're much more forgiving of the team we love.
No, he outright flops on occasion. It's not with the frequency of someone like Kirilenko, but he does it.
I don't like Scola's flopping one bit. Lowry on the other hand actually does get fouled IMO, he finds unusual ways of putting his body in the right place at the right time and creating awkward situations where the ref HAS to make the call. If anything Lowry is exploiting the rule book in a crafty and unique way. It really is strange to watch. Shaq sounded and looked dumb, like a hypocrite when he flopped against D. Howard last year. He mumbled this unexpressive rebuttal but to me it made sense. Sometimes you have to embellish the contact to get the call. Could anyone knock down Shaq on a drive? Heck no. Does that mean it shouldn't be a charge though? Sometimes you have to help the refs out. There is pure evil flopping (Smith last night) and not-so-evil flopping, Battier (most of the times).
I don't like flopping, but I usually don't care either way unless the flop resulted in a foul that should not have been called. If a player gets fouled and flops to embellish the contact (like Lowry frequently does), I will notice it and say "nice acting job there" or something. But when a player just falls down because someone breathed on him and gets an unfair advantage, then I don't like it at all. Scola sometimes does this, although not really often. I've never seen Battier or Chuck do it. Battier will embellish the effect when he's taking a charge, but otherwise when playing defense I've never see him flail his head backwards as if he was hit by a mack truck, like some players do. I've seen Lowry do it on occasion. That stuff should be taken out of the game.
No Yao or Deke this season, it means we don't have any shot blocker. The rockets players have to take charges to protect the paint.
Only player on our team that flops is Scola. He'll fall down when being posted up without much contact there. He'll do it maybe once a game against a legit post scorer, but usually Hayes is guarding postmen so it doesn't happen often. I hate all flopping, but since the NBA isn't doing anything (more like encouraging it), might as well do what it takes to even out calls.
You nailed it there. I don't care if there is a foul and over react to show the contact. That (sadly) is a part of the game. If we don't do it the you can be sure the other team is, so to me, that's just gamesmanship. But what Kirelenko does and what Smith did last night is just cowardice you know you have a mismatch and instead of playing sound D, you pretend that an elbow is thrown and flail yourself to the ground hoping the ref sees it out of the corner of his eye and makes the wrong call. That is the move that makes me sick.
Battier sometimes flops but Scola's flops are so annoying. Him and Ginobili are just annoying the way they flop.
Flopping is border line cheating and that's the bottom line. The game needs to punish players/teams that flop by giving technical fouls or suspensions if the player does it often. that's the only way it is going to stop.
We almost never flop, we draw charges. Flopping is taking contact that you'd normally not beat an eyelash at, and making it look like he shanked you and you trip all over yourself and fall. Taking the charge is getting into position and actually getting hit with the force and falling. Again I nearly never see the Rockets flop, a few times I'll see Landry do it but there's substantial contact for a foul already, he just showcases it.
