Anyone else wondering why Magic, Michael, and Shaq are sucking up to Lebron James? I just read Magic took him around New York and they both partied with P. Diddy. I read somewhere else Jordan gave Lebron his cell number and Shaq has already contacted him. Magic calls him his "little brother." What gives? It looks pathetic if you ask me.

Maybe they just wanted to talk to him since there was so much hype around him. Maybe they are trying to help him out and maybe after talking to him they like him. I dunno...I really don't think they are sucking up to him.

If you're Michael *freaking* Jordan you don't go out of your way to give your cell phone out to an unproven hyped prep star unless you got ulterior motives or you want a piece of the LeBron train. Same goes for Shaq, Magic, and the others.

If I'm Michael Jordan I wait to see if he's for real AFTER he plays in the league then meet him like NBA players meet each other. You don't go stalking the kid before he even gets into the league and butter him up like these other so called superstars are already doing.

precisely these guys are smart businessmen they arent going after lebron for the game the kid has its the $$$ that will come from the kid if they can use the kid someway or the other for their advantage they will. think about it from lebrons view if you have MJ or Magic suggesting u do something dont u think u would over some suit from an agency or company?

silentfan- did you really just call Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'neal "so called superstars"??!?!?! how anyone can even dare to try to question whether those guys are superstars or not is beyond me.

Maybe some of you are right and they have business interests in mind. It's a no brainer that Jordan gave Lebron his cell number because he intended to go back to being a GM for the Wizards at the time. Even now it's a good move because he may end up working with another team.

Magic Johnson has strong ties to the Lakers organization and I believe he even owns a small percentage of the Lakers. (am I wrong?). He also owns many business and has many business interests that could possibly explain why it isn't a bad idea for him to pal up to Lebron.

O'neal- I have no idea except for my final suggestion.

But what I'm really curious about is why do you assume they're "sucking up" to him? All three of these guys know what enormous pressure is. They know what hype is. They know what carrying a team on their shoulders is like. Can't it be possible that they just relate to the kid and maybe even feel pity for such a young man to face those pressures? Maybe they feel somewhat obligated to help mentor him. One can hope for the best anyway.

Well what I meant to imply by calling them "so-called" superstars is: If they were acting like superstars they wouldn't be oogling and pandering to the latest hype machine that rolls around every other draft year. At least wait till the guy gets in the league and proves himself before they go out on a limb and treat him like their equal. With star treatment like this from the likes of these NBA greats, how could a 18 year old kid NOT be a cocky son of a gun? These guys are setting him up to fail miserably. I don't even think the HS players of tomorrow even think "I wanna be like Mike" anymore because Mike will come calling to be their best friend first lol.

It's gotta be about the money and these hanger's on--which now includes current and former NBA stars--all want a piece of the LeBron gravy train. It's just sad to see it happening from people you expected more from.

Why? Because they relate to him. Plain and simple. They do not relate to Yao.

At least Lebron is acting like himself, and not trying to be Jordan (unlike another HS player we all know).

Lebron is a good kid. I like the way he talks to the media. He's straight up. Keeps it real.

Maybe they don't want the kid to fail, so they're trying their best to mentor him.

I want him to fail. He is, after all, not playing for the Rockets. I want everyone else in the NBA to fail.

    ;)

I want the Rockets to beat him fair and square.

But I don't want Lebron to get hurt of something like that.

Maybe MJ, Magic and company are trying to teach him the "old school" way of beign a professional (convincing him that practice is important, respect your elders, most importantly to play the game with apassion).
I don't doubt they may want a peice of the action but I think these guys want the kid "raised right" and to not turn out like a playground legend in the NBA.

More like 'little grandson'. I agree on it being pathetic. It probably perpetuates the whole primadonna thing. I think rookies should be rookies, period. Sit in the front of the bus, carry bags, that sort of thing.

You guys live in the real world...these other dreamers who think this is about mentoring and such....well, they can dream. This whole thing is all about $$$$. It just goes to show you even the rich can act like poor beggars when the latest and "greatest" rolls down the red carpet.

People like to associate themselves with winners. So, Lebron is an extension of those guys. They "relate" to him. Like a "son."

Sounds familiar to the "Yao only fans?"
    Hmmmm...? ;)

One note. It's not all "brotherly" though. It's also related to the "in crowd." Magic, Jordan and Shaq have been there, done that. So, they KNOW what it's like to be in the limelight.

All of those guys have earned their due as "main men," or "goto guys." With the exception of Kenny Smith, who actually thinks he's a "star" and a Hall of Famer. Heh...

Remember, Magic, Jordan and Barkley wont be playing anymore. They miss the game. Now they are "fans with clout."

By the way, Magic and Jordan are Yao fans too. Barkley isn't. Heh...he had to kiss an ass! :D
