It seems like movies are coming out quicker and quicker on DVD format. I thought there was some regulation here, but I may be mistaken. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Not really. The studios have a "window" that they try and follow.
With the exception of blockbusters, a theatre run will go no longer
than three months. Agreements keep films from pay-per-view for six months or so. Their goal is to get the DVD out between those two dates.

One bad side effect of this is multiple versions of the same film on DVD.
"Pearl Harbor" is just out (the "60th anniversary edition"), but they have
already announced a 3+ disc monster set for next year.

Movies don't have legs anymore. They have big openings, fall off quickly and disappear from theaters in short order. This compressed time frame naturally leads to shorter times between theatrical run and home video release.

Zero legs. It won't have a theatrical release at all. It's already out on home video (buy yours now. Follow the link in my sig).

Sorry, I was being cryptic. What I meant by "legs" was how are the sales going? Better or worse than expected (or hoped)?

About as I expected, significantly less than I had hoped (we've sold a grand total of ZERO copies, though Chris from MovieForums.com is buying one ostensibly to give away in a MovieForums contest). But that's really what I expected.

And you can't be cryptic around me, I'm too dense to pick up on it. :)

I really dont see a difference of Movies coming quicker to DVD than VHS were in the past. The only difference I see is that when a movie is released on home format, about 90% the DVD is available for sale while the VHS is just for rental (unless you want to fork over $90) then it is released 3 months after in video stores. Sometimes they have the video also for sale when the DVD comes out but most of the time, its those movies that made money in the box office.

I couldn't help but remember this thread when I found out today that Oceans 11 is supposed to be released on DVD on January 8, 2002. Didn't this thing just open in theatres about a week or two ago? Actually I think it was released on December 7th to theatres. Buy.com is already advertising it as being available on DVD on January 8th.

This release has a considerable delay between the theatrical and DVD release- it's the dvd of the original "Ocean's 11" with those Frank Sintra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, jr. guys you may have heard of... ; )

By the way, does anyone know when season 3 of the Sopranos comes out on DVD?
