I realize that there are 80 more games to play, but this will be here before we know it, and it is something to look forward to...

    1) A healthy Yao. Getting to play alongside the best center in the game should have an impact on their decision as they would have their best chance to win a ring.

    2) No personal state income tax

    3) Aaron Brooks, Trevor Ariza, Carl Landry, Luis Scola, David Andersen, Chase Budinger, Kyle Lowry, Chuckwagon are all reliable as a supporting cast

Who do I think will be looking at Houston as a possibility? Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudamire, Michael Redd, Joe Johnson, Stephen Jackson

Not to mention the chance of getting side swiped and shot in the leg.

Unfortunately, there's a big reason why they should NOT be looking at Houston: money. We won't have as much cap space next season as you might think, if we want to retain some of our players (e.g., Scola), so we won't be able to compete with the salary offers of, say, New York.

Re-signing Scola and Lowry will eat up pretty much all of our cap space. If they decide to play for free you may have a point.

not to be a total debbie downer

but can we get through the other 80 games of this season first before we start talking offseason 2010?

    offseason 2009 was painful enough

Hopefully seeing if we could get Joe Johnson. That man would be gold in our offense and could really lead us to championship when Yao comes back.

    Starting lineup

    Yao Ming
    Joe Johnson
    Luis Scola
    Trevor Ariza
    Aaron Brooks

Now only if we had the money to offer him a decent contract :(

You forgot T-Mac in that list of yours. He'll be a free agent from the Houston Rockets? Let's steal him! :D

You should be required to at least have a basic understanding of how NBA free agency, trades, the salary cap, contracts, etc. work before starting a thread about it. This thread fails.

While you're right about re-signing Scola and Lowry probably eating into the Rockets' available cap space, I think you exaggerate the impact. The Rockets will still have some cap room available if they play their cards right (which may, unfortunately, involve playing hardball with Scola and Lowry in restricted free agency), but certainly not enough to attract a "max" caliber free agent.

And Rockets2K, thanks for referencing my thread.

So, if the Rockets won't have as much money to sign a star next season, then why is Morey not making any trades to compromise the little money that they supposedly will have? If they won't sign a star?

Because he wants the FLEXIBILITY to sign a max free agent if the Rockets truly feel that is in the best interests of the organization.

What I have been saying from Day 1 has NOT been that it is impossible for the Rockets to get a max free agent. It has been that the Rockets cannot sign a max free agent AND keep this team together in any meaningful way.

Morey has put the Rockets in position to be ABLE to sign a max player. But to do so (barring a trade of Shane Battier for a scrub's expiring contract, which is highly unlikely) would likely require the Rockets to waive their rights to Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry and to not pick up the team option on Chuck Hayes.

I thought that Stephen Jackson's contract ran past 2010?
    NBA Contracts

    Code:
Golden State Warriors Date # of total signed years salary misc FA

    Stephen Jackson ....... 7/14/04,11/17/08 6+3 $38 million+?? '13

    Both
    ESPN Trade Machine
    and
    RealGM Trade Checker

indicate that his contract extends beyond 2010.

    What is your source?

If I am a free agent Yao would actually be a reason I would want to stay away from Houston. NBA players don't live in a bubble, they see Yao getting injured every other year. Why would I want to sign with a team, bust my ass all season, only to see Yao go down again followed by my championship hopes?

Now some guys are clearly all about the money - like Ariza - and their focus are on minutes and shots so they can make a name for themselves. However, for a player that has set winning a championship as their goal - Houston would be a risky choice.

This is why I really think Morey will try and aquire someone via trade before the season's end. Relying on FA in 2010 is just to risky so trading for someone and signing to a long term deal this year will clear up whats going to happen next offseason.

    In all seriousness - LeBron?

I am still not entirely proficient at analyzing salary matching, free agent status, salary cap, etc. But I do know that we have the potential to make some huge moves in the next couple of years.

I would really like to hear from some of the more schooled, veteran posters about whether or not we have a legitimate chance of signing LeBron James or another superstar caliber player, and how it would be done.

I would thank you all for treating this thread with the utmost seriousness.

Not a flying chance in hell. We simply won't have the cap space unless Yao opts out and we don't re-sign him.
