We must be best in the league at taking charges. Anywhere I can find this stat?

I was thinkiong while watching the last couple of games, taking charges is really making up for our lack of height and shotblocking at the 4.

I love it. It's like we've discovered a new weapon. Take advatage of the new "don't touch the top SG's" rule by baiting them to the rim and drawing a charge. Better than a block in fact because its a guaranteed possession for us.

Yao Ming is the best at taking charges, the only problem is that the refs don't think so.

if battier wasnt on our team, i would be hating playing against him for all the charges he takes. but since he's on our team, then its awesome

    1. I'd be interested in this stat, too... last year's stat is on 82games.com and the Rockets were DEAD LAST in the league with 106 total. Wesley led the team with 16, Howard and Yao each had 12.

    http://www.82games.com/charge.htm

Shane Battier seems to have 16 already.

    2. I'm not sure whether it's better or worse than a block... sure you get guaranteed posession, not to mention racking up a foul on the oppposing team/player, but you don't get a fast break.

    Anyhow, I'm happy with either.

what? i've never ever seen yao take a charge...he's always in the restricted zone when he decides to take a charge.

i noticed that vspan doesn't even know how to have your feet squared to th basket while catching the ball so i don't think he's all that great in the fundamentals of basketball.

from r2k's highlight i've seen, it seemed battier takes at least 3 charges per game.

VSpan could be just as fearless (if not more) in drawing the charges, but he has yet to play significant minutes for us to compare. Battier is the man by at least a mile on our team so far into the season. If anything, Battier shows he has got something definitely tangible on stats sheet! Yeah, it is so tangible that 82games.com keeps track of it.

Imteresting question. I'd take charges for the reasons you said, there's more positive reasons than a block. If I took a wild guess, I'd say 50% of blocks end up as a turnover. Especially in this day of ESPN highlights, I think all the young guys would rather swat a ball into the crowd instead of deflecting it to the ground to give a teammate a chance recover it.

It's measured. Last year, just over 60% of blocks ended up in turnovers. 16% were those swatted into the crowd.

    Defensive intangibles:

    Battier, Vspan, then Hayes

    Offensively:

    Vspan, Battier = Hayes

    Other Categories I thought of:

Making the extra pass - (Alston, Howard)

Trash Buckets {pick up a loose ball or offensive board and score} - (Hayes, Battier)

    Battier.

With all the floppers the Spurs have, I'd assume they would lead the league

Good question. For our team, I'd say the charge is better because we rarely run the break as it is... even during times when the opprotunity presents itself. Might as well get posession and the foul.

I'm 80% sure it was Lebron though I'm not certain.
