Me and my girlfriend were discussing something the other day. Here is the senario:

Her sister lives in a house with another female roomate. Well her sister likes animals, dogs, cats, etc. The roomate doesn't really care for animals because of the mess that they make and leave behind. The sister already has one cat but wants another cat for Christmas. Well, without consulting the roomate, my girlfriend and a friend of hers went to a pet center to pick up a cat to surprise her sister. I said that they should have asked the roomate first to see if it was alright so no conflict would get started. My girlfriend says that since her sister pays half the rent and other bills that she should be able to freely have any pets that she chooses. I believe that to be totally wrong and it shows that my girlfriend has a complete lack of consideration for others.

    Who's side are you on?

I'm just asking for your opinions. I stated mine to my girlfriend and that's all I plan to do. I just want to see if more people on this board agree with me or with her.

I think they definitely should have asked if it was cool with the roomate first.

It's foolish to assume that the cat would stay on "her side" all the time even when she's not around to take care of the cat.

She might think that because her sister already has a cat that all the pet problems are eliminated, but this is a new cat that has to be broken in on what's right or wrong.

This is made worse because you wrote that her roommate doesn't like the mess animals leave behind. The roommate might secretly hate the original cat already.

If you ask me, I think it made a messy problem worse.

Actually Invisible Fan you just stated something that I left out. The roomate is already unhappy with the original cat. I think all my girlfriend and her did was multiply a problem by 2.

Ya gotta check with the roommate. She's right, she does pay half the rent, etc. HALF being the key word. They share the living space and if a pet is going to be introduced into the equation, I think both parties have to be acceptable to the fact.

    Simply, its just plain inconsiderate!

yeah I think the fact that she only pays half the rent your girlfreind should have checked with the person who pays the other half. If anything its just the right/nice thing to do.

but as one person stated above stay away from this train wreck waiting to happen:eek:

Your girlfriend's lack of consideration for the roommate is strange. How can she not see that this is a problem? Just because someone pays half the rent does not mean they can keep adding animals to the mix. If I were the roommate, then I would be totally pissed off. Part of sharing living areas as roommates is consulting the other before you do things like this. By both paying half the rent, no one has any more say than the other in matters like this.

Well, its obvious to rectify this situation the two roommates must draw a line down the middle of the apartment, with each staying on their respective sides. Of course any resources on the either side must be bargained for, and subjected to hilarious consequences. And when that eventually fails, you can bring in Richie Cunningham.

I would buy my sister two tickets to The Two Towers and a gift certificate to Pappasitos and tell her to go on a date with her boyfriend. I'd then try to hook myself up with a foursome with all of her girlfriends.

PS-Damn. wrong thread...Uhmm..They should have consulted the other roomate. Especially if she had previously made her animal-opinion be known.

Unbelievable - I'm glad I live with my wife and not with roommates anymore. Btw, I hope your girlfriend is a little more considerate than her sister?

You gave some good advice, I had to deal with a surprise cat my roommate brought home and I wasn't very pleased. It was the whole respect thing, as in you don't bring an animal home drop it on the floor and say "here is our new roomate". Not Cool.
