Who do you guys think will start for us in the PG position? Ward (familiar with the plays of JVG) ; Lue (good off the bench player but I don't know if he can handle the starting postion well) or Sura (a defensive combo guard and can handle the rock and dish it out)
i think lue should start because he shoots well unlike sura and is younger and has more energy than ward can give us. then i'd have ward come off the bench for his 3 pt shooting and let sura back up tmac and get spot minutes at the 1 and 3 depending on the situation.
Ward will Probly Start, but i think Sura will see more minutes then him. Ward is rubbish, but lets hope he can give us atleast 15 minutes of solid play.
my bet is on ward starting. he has the experience in his favor and also fits better with our starters than our bench. ward isnt a PG thats going to push the tempo. our bench will be a fast team next year: mo, boki, sura, all like to run and lue is better suited to be the PG for that team. yao, JH, JJ, and Tmac all work well under the JVG style of play and ward is a perfect extention of gundy.
I agree. The Chronicle seems to think that Ward will be the starter. Anyway, a second unit of Mo, Lue, Sura and Boki will be a nice change of pace foursome. If Howard slides over to C, then you have a pretty high octane bunch that will run. Of course, the defense would probably suck, but ...............................
I'm guessing Sura. He said he has played mostly the 1 over the last few years and with out a doubt has the best overall game of the three. I see the pecking order as: Sura, Lue and Ward. I think Lue will get quite a few minutes off of the bench as Sura will likely play a lot of minutes as the back up 2. Ward will be the third option IMO.
It seems they are talking as if Ward is going to start. Sura and Taylor will be the energy super subs off the bench. My gut tells me though that late in games Sura will be the PG. I think he will be the finisher.
I think judging from Sura's comments that they are going to compete for the rotation- starting, 1-sub, 3rd string So I expect it to be a battle/competition decided in pre-season May the best of the back up point guards win the starting job.
I don't think it really matters who starts --- Sura could see time at the 1, 2 or 3. Defensively he can handle most 3's. Ward may start by Sura may see more minutes. I only hope that a Ward - T-Mac - JJ - Sura rotation doesn't eat into Boki's minutes too much.
I really like Lue/Sura/Boki/MoT off the bench, and if we can add Mutombo, that would be great as well. If we get Mutombo, we have really built ourselves a solid team. If Minnesota and Spurs slip up, we can be #2 in the West. Otherwise, if we make the Chicago trade, I see us as 3rd seed. Yao (35)/Mutombo(13) Howard (25)/MoT(23)/Spoon(0) JJ (33)/Boki(13)/T-Mac(2) T-Mac (36)/Sura(12) Ward (23)/Sura(13)/Lue(12) SOLID 10 man rotation. JJ's minutes go down significantly, but it's best for him since he's in his mid 30's now, it will keep him extra fresh for the playoffs. Boki should be able to play 13 very solid minutes, and T-Mac can get some minutes there too.
Lue should be the starter, with Sura coming off the bench. Ward should be used the same way Oakley and Mark Jackson were used. Only in certain situations should he be used. But in no way should he be a regular rotation player.
I agree, but I think that with Ward's past with JVG and his new 3 year contract means he will get more PT than he should. I'm think JVG will have Ward start with Lue as the backup and Sura getting more minutes at the backup 2 and very few minutes at the 1.
I think Ward'll PROBABLY start the beginning of the season. But he'll also be there to teach the other guys what the PG's function in JVG's system should be. By the all star break, we'll see Lue & Sura taking most of the PG minutes and Ward doing spot duty. Man, I was hoping we'd see Gaines step up and contribute. Now it looks like he'll be buried at the end of the bench, Boki '03 style.
I also believe Ward will start with Lue backing up the 1 spot. I see Sura backing up T-Mac and playing a bit of point when Jeff Van Gundy's feeling saucy. I tend to agree that Ward is pretty much done, but you have to believe that JVG would never have signed him if he believed Ward couldn't still play team defense. On offense, he won't need to penetrate because we have probably the game's best perimeter player right next to him. Ward's only real job on offense will be to make sure they play is executed properly, initiate the play at the proper time and camp at the three-point line for the double-team pass. I feel like he'll be able to handle that, and if not, we've got a couple guys who can split major minutes with him. I'm excited about this offseason because I'm anxious to see how the Rockets perform once JVG has had the opportunity to put together "his" team. It's only fair to give him that chance before judging his ability as a coach.
If we complete the Mutombo deal, this would have to be the most solid 12-man lineup we have started a season with. Now, if all twelve played at the same time then it might mean more than it does. Maybe, if JVG rotated them every few minutes than the defense would be so stifling that it could be worth the try. First thing to go when the legs are tired is the shot !
