Let's say that the Tmac trade went on, who do you guys think is the most fit PG to our system? I can't think of any other FA or tradeable PGs we can go after to... Arroyo? Alston? Mike James? etc...

If the Rockets can get Mcgrady, all they would really need from the point guard is a Derek Fisher type that can consistently hit open jumpers and defend. A distributing point guard that needs the ball in their hands wouldn't really be necessary since Yao and Mcgrady will probably have the ball in their hands 80% of the time anyway. Cheap guards that the Rockets could easily get are:

    Juan Dixon
    Earl Watson
    Damon Jones
    Troy Hudson
    Tony Delk
    Mike James

Brent Barry would also be a great pickup if the Rockets could get him.

Rafer Alston's name gets mentioned with great frequency at CC. JVG will not even bid on Alston as he is coached by his brother Stan. Playing for the Heat makes Alston an untouchable IMO.

The following are worth a long look if we aren't in the running for Brent Barry...

I like Mike James a lot. I watched him as a Celtic and Piston and now in the playoffs. James has ice water in his veins. He is totally self-confident and fearless when the game is on the line. And in those circumstances, he makes reasonably good decisions as to whether to shoot or pass off. The only downside is James' height. He's listed at 6'2" but IMO that's being generous.

Damon Jones. Played very well in TJ's absence and in the playoffs. Can be turnover prone...especially when trapped. This could be a serious problem if teams decide to hard double him on the PnR. Decent backup and probably could be had for ~$1m.

Lindsey Hunter. Getting a little long in the tooth but has the experience JVG might like. Has a real good A/TO ratio.

We don't have the $ to outbid Utah for Lopez or Arroyo unless we severely overpay and Utah doesn't match.

A sleeper for me would be Bobby Sura. He's a 6'5" SG with decent handles who would be very adequate as a backup PG. Sura is Brent Barry-lite.

Jim Jackson will move to PG, and JVG will pick up Tierre Brown to back him up -- unless Charlie Ward is available. Then Ward is the PG and Jackson will back him up.

Gater: Did you know Mike James comes from Amityville, N.Y? :D

Should McGrady come to Houston, I'd expect Eric Snow to follow. The Sixers are desperate to dump his contract (five years left) and really have no use for him since they'll mostly be playing AI and Salmons at the point next season. He could probably be had for A. Griffin, a Jim O'Brien favorite, and someone like Spoon or Pike.

Though Snow is a bad distance shooter, he can hit the 15-footer with consistency and knows how to lead and score on the break.

if you are right about this (and i heard they want to dump snow too) then even w/o the tmac deal, i would make this trade.

spoon and AG are axactly what O'Brien likes.

I have someone that fits that description perfectly. His name is Cuttino Mobley. Some of you may have heard of him.

Probably the most underated defender in the league and can post up Kobe Bryant. I think he's a 40 percent 3 pt shooter also.

Seriously, with Tmac on board, Cuttino could be the perfect PG for this team. Cuttino wouldn't have to create. He just needs to dump it into Yao or pass it off to Tmac and JJ. We know he can hit an open shot. He's also the only available person I know that has the ability to shutdown Bibby, Cassell, Parker, Nash and Jwill.

he is a horrible passer and can run a fastbreak any better than steve can.

he is fit to be our SG. we need to bring in a point with a good ast/to ratio.

It's likely that mobley would be gone in a deal for tmac.

Van Exel wants to play in Texas close to his home. He's not going to go back to Dallas, so the choices are Houston or San Antonio. I bet he'd prolly prefer Houston since he lives here, and if we trade Francis, we would have a starting role for Van Exel.

I think the Rockets would need someone who’s a tad more stable and who’s jumper is a little more consistent.

Though I wouldn’t mind having Cat come off the bench to backup both guard positions.

Cat started his career with the Rockets running the point. He certainly has the capability, except that his court vision -- as opposed to his passing ability -- is suspect. That's where I prefer Jim Jackson. Jackson is tall, defensive-minded, cool under pressure, smart, understands defenses and can knock down shots from any range. Also, he already is under contract.

Snow's contract is too long for his age and talent level. NVE is really a SG rather than a playmaker (I'd just as soon use the Cat, who is already under contract for a reasonable price). Rafer Alston and Damon Jones are quick and nimble but their TO problems are similar to SF3's.

I still believe Charlie Ward lurks in the background.

Charlie Ward couldn't get off the Spurs' bench, who had no depth at PG. I don't think he'll ever be a starter again.

I hope you're right, but I didn't think Mark Jackson would ever play again either. And it looked like Spoon was done. And...remember, with JVG old Knicks never die until there is a stake in their hearts.:D

Jim Jackson is an alright passer, but no PG, his handles arent good enough, hes turnover prone just like francis and cat.

Let's keep this to players who are available.

Almost any player is available at the right price, but I agree that Chicago would have to be sorely -- and I mean sorely -- tempted before they would let him go. Of the taller but unproven PGs who could be acquired, I would like to see JVG do something with Steve Blake of Washington, Reece Gaines of Orlando or Blake Stepp who is projected to be a middle second rounder.
