I just saw on the Rockets website that we've signed some guy named Ike Nwankwo. Has anybody ever heard of this guy?

I played with Ike in high school. He's a local product from Cy-Creek on the northwest side. He graduated in '92 as one of the highest rated recruits that year based primarily on his size. That year the best coachs from around D-I made recruiting visits to watch him in action. Among those interested and extending offers were Bobby Knight and Rick Pitino. The varsity squad didn't live up to expectations (there was another D-I player on the team who played out his eligibility at Middle Tennesseee State) and Ike's value continued to plummet. He had the raw physical frame, but his attitude was piss poor, and he failed to be a leader and live up to expectations. Someone of his size should have dominated on that level, but he never seemed motivated to do so. Anyhow, he played out a string at UCLA, mainly as bench fodder after his stock continued to fall due to a broken arm either his freshman or sophomore year. He's bounced around from training camp to training camp the past few years, but hasn't stuck anywhere. Look for this signing to be a friendly gesture to a hometown boy and nothing more.
