Who would you want leading during this crisis: Bush or Gore

    During the presidential election, the nation was split 50/50 for Bush and Gore. With these new developments in our country, who would you prefer now to lead us : Bush or Gore

    It doesn't matter. Both have experience. Gore has experience with this under Clinton, and George W. has experience with his ol' man. Please don't turn this into a republican vs democrat situation.

    I'm not turning it into a republican/democrat thing. It was brought up in a discussion yesterday with some friends of mine and I was wondering what everyone else thought. I personally feel more comfortable with Bush since he is definitely more pro military. I was in the military during Clintons term and the majority of the people I knew did not support Clinton and his anti military stance. Most of my beliefs tend to side with the republican party but not all. The friends I were talking with were predominantly democrats and they also were glad that Bush was in office because they felt he would deal with this more swiftly and harsher.

    But see you would never know. Just because Clinton wasn't looked at as pro-military doesn't mean that Gore wouldn't be pro-military or able to handle this.

    I am not Mr. Political Guy by any means. I personally think that Gore would want to mediate more and lets talk and hold hands and hug a tree. I on the other hand want our government to act and act swiftly. I believe that Bush will do that. I do not believe that who ever (and whatever countries are harboring these idiots) did this will go unpunished. I do not want to see these guys on court tv a year and a half down the road. As Russ said on 610 AM this morning, "I do not want lawyers, I want F-16's."

    I totally understand. I couldnt sleep last night either. I do not believe that a lot of the bickering that has been present since yesterday is at all good. If anything I believe that we should try to stand firm and together. United we stand baby.

    President Bush gets my vote. And it wasn't even close. If for no other reason than this is a time of war and republicans are historically more apt to react with military use. More importantly, the soldiers are FAR MORE supportive of Bush than they were of Clinton. And a supportive soldier fights with his heart.

    I believe in President Bush right here, more so than any other candidate. I suppose we could send Al Gore at the terrorists so he could bore them to death?

    This situation calls for a Texan.

    Bush isn't exactly a party animal himself. And I don't want to get into an argument, but Gore got more popular votes, how could more people stand behind Bush!? It's a moot point because I think Gore or Bush could get the job done. It doesn't take a genius to step back and let the CIA and FBI do their job.

    I don't really care, because both would mostly be advised by others...thus, the response would probably be about the same.

    I would like to clarify a few glaring errors on your part, however.

    #1. Gore has a much more Military-based background. He has written papers on ICBMs, had been on military boards, etc.

    #2. Gore is very pro-military...more than Clinton and more than Bush. In the 88 Democratic primary, he suffered greatly because he was labeled a big military wacko by most Dems.

    #3. His projected military budget was larger than Bush's.

    Again, I don't really think it would have mattered too much as far as our response...this argument is really about which guy would generate the most confidence in things getting done. Both suck at public speaking -- Bush sounds like an idiot and Gore sounds like a kindergarten teacher -- so it is again pointless.

    Strategic and military advisors are in control of this.

    I would personally prefer Gore, because that means he would be president beyond this tragedy.

    However, I'm pretty sure he and Bush and Clinton and Reagan and Dole and Bradley would have the same exact response in this situation.

    One of the first things that I said is that I do not know a lot about politics. I do not know specifics about where he stands and do not want to say that he did this or that. My impression is that he would be weak when it comes to the military. The military would not be supportive of Gore just as they had not of Clinton. I have many friends that are still in the military and know how the majority of them feel. You very well may be correct but I doubt that Gore would back the military more than Bush. I find that hard to believe. Also, they do not call the president the Commander in Chief for nothing. He is in charge of the military and can send troops and do as he pleases with them within reason.

    I know that Gore recieved more of the populatr vote but I think that in this poll and probably nationwide, most people would feel more comfortable with Bush taking charge in a time of war than Gore. Of course most of the people on this bbs would be from Texas and likely biased. My friends that I mentioned earlier are staunch democrats and hate to even look at Bush, but they said that they felt more comfortable with Bush running the show than they would if Gore was.

    Well, believe what you will, it is just usually best not to for ideas based on ignorance (I do not mean that as an insult). Facts are facts.

    In regards to your second statement about commander-in-chief status...again, that is mostly symbolic. Obviously no president would really take over the military and decide all of its actions. the president gets advice from military and advisors, etc. about what to do. He then officially "makes them happen."

    maybe if bush hadn't gone around saying how unprepared and underfunded our military is perhaps this wouldn't have happened...

    Well obviously, Bush was noting how unprepared our military was as a result of Clinton in a sense "de-militarizing" our miliary. Clinton significantly reduced the spending on the military.
