The June draft is next week. Who are the Astros considering w/ their 1st round pick? There doesn't seem to be many good college players available this year. Does anyone have any info? Thanks.
It is way too difficult to project baseball draft picks once you get past the first few. The Astros pick 28th or 29th so I doubt they even know .
I don't have a subscription to Baseball America so I can't access their site. Guess I'll have to buy their Draft Preview, thanks anyway.
There's a big lanky pitcher at my son's high school (Durham, NC Riverside) who is rumored to be a very high selection if not the #1. Anyone know his name?
Hope they don't take Teagarden; he's bound for UT. UT also signed Scott Kazmir (lefty who throws 97) and Brent Clevlen. I'd be shocked if either made it to campus.
I wouldn't mind the Stros risking a pick on one of the Houston's top 5 pitchers who are all projected to go in the first round. Scott Kazhmir Clint Everets Wardell Starling James Loney Mark McMormick Kazhmir will prolly go in the top 10, and Starling and Loney in the mid 1st round, the thing about those 2 is some teams want them as position players, so it will be instresting to see what they do there. The 2 most likely players to land in Houston would be either Mark McMormick from Clear Creek or Clint Everets from Cy Falls. Should be instresting to see where all the local talent end up.
Kazmir definitely goes in the top 10. Hard throwing lefties are a rare commodity. If he were bigger, he may be the #1 pick.
With the 29th pick in the first round, the Houston Astros select: Derick Grigsby, rhp, Northeast Texas CC. Q: Mike Rizzo from Palmdale Ca asks: Hello and thank you for your time.Is this a good year for Juco players since the draft is a little light on talent, and for LHP in general? A: Jim Callis: Very good year for juco players, especially compared to college players. The best juco draft is Northeast Texas CC RHP Derick Grigsby, who has thrown 96 mph and could be a sandwich pick. He's from the same high school that produced Colt Griffin. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/features/chat051702.html
i specifically went to see kazmir vs my hs this year.. but i'm sure ya'll dont care what my scouting analysis of him is lol.. i need to talk to someone i know and see what he thought of everts going ahead of kazmir since he faced both of them this year and used to play with kazmir on the same team i believe..
Yeah, that'd be interesting! All reports indicated that Kazmir would go to the Reds at #3, so I don't understand what happened. Also, what does your friend say about Werdell Starling out of Elkins? How did he fall into the 4th round? Thanks.
As much as MLB is sometimes completely idiotic, they do one really cool thing with the draft: The MLB website puts up hours and hours of raw scouting video that anyone can watch. You can access the page here. They did it last year, too. Watching the video let me latch on to this really impressive 12th round HS pick that the 'stros signed named Jose(?) DeLeon. The kid totaly throws the ball like Pedro. He needs to develop some more velocity, but if he does, watch out.
drewp.. who was asking for too much money.. scott kazmir or the elkins guy? hmm the expos changed everyone like a few months ago and had to get all new scouting people etc when mlb took them over.. maybe they accidentally drafted the wrong guy from cyfalls haha.. mlb.com is reporting kazmir's fastball at 91-93 although people on my schools' team were saying it hit around 97 in the games they faced him this year.. i'll see if i can get in touch with people that faced him and the guy who was on his team in the summer for years... when i went to watch him pitch one of the first things i noticed was he looked awefully small.. i wasn't even sure if he was 6'0.. but i guess there are small pitchers in the big leagues.. also it looked like he was throwing mostly fastballs..but there was other pitches too i'm sure just hard to tell from the stands sometimes... fastsballs are about all he needed when he was facing high school hitters though... but it will be interesting to see if he can develop other really good pitches.... it's kinda hard to judge these guys against hs players it seems.. because guys from my school were getting the bat on the ball some..(not a lot though mostly getting struck out easily) ..when they did make contact it just was usually foul since they dont get the bat around fast enough.. so some of it seemed it was just they can't swing that fast whereas minor leaguers and major leaguers can catch up to it a little better.. if his pitches are usually around 91-93 which i'd say they probably are he will have to develop some other good pitches too id think.. in hs it seems if you can throw in the 90s thats all you need to get past hs hitters.. overall the guy is good.. very good ..... if he can develop even more and keep working hard in the minors he should be in good shape.. as for everts.. i'd be interested to find out if signing with the expos is a worry for him since they might not exist after this season.. hmm now that they have rezoned the district or whatever because of a new school being built.. if i was starting hs this past year i would have gone to cyfalls.. and if he would have came about 10 years ago before cyfalls was built.. he would have gone to my hs lol.. oh well at least we have woody williams.!! wohoo only current major league guy we have
In other draft news today, the 'Stros selected Dickie Thon's nephew & Jimy's son - along with about 40 other guys that we've never heard of.
