Been listening to over the weekend, quite a few classic hard rock bands in Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Got me wondering - who people feel is the greatest hard rock band of all-time? Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath Deep Purple AC/DC (the Fatty FatBastard choice ) Jimi Hendrix Experience Cream (my personal favorite) I gotta go with Zeppelin over Cream (although I like all of these bands, yes Fatty, even AC/DC) mainly because Zeppelin was together a lot longer than Cream and their influence was much more felt.
sabbath (with both ozzy and dio) gets my vote. i don't consider zeppelin, deep purple, hendrix, or cream as hard rock, and sabbath is better than ac/dc. though i would say zeppelin was a better band. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gbxfe7DMxVo&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gbxfe7DMxVo&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NUJH7y1yK_E&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NUJH7y1yK_E&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Sabbath was harder than anything else at the time. Zepplin was a better band of musicians but as for "Hard Rock" I'd give the edge to Sabbath.
Should have added GnR to the poll to have at least one 80s band to compete with all of those 70s bands. I voted for Styx, though, since their hardest is certainly underrated.
Oh Well, wherever, wherever you are, Iron Maiden's gonna get you, no matter how far. See the blood flow watching it shed up above my head. Iron Maiden wants you for dead.
if we're talking "hard" rock...I'd have to say Black Sabbath....I like some of Zepplin's stuff like "When The Levees Break", but the overall "dark" feel of Black Sabbath does it for me, plus I love Ozzie's voice.............I love Jimi, but I don't really consider him "hard" rock so that's why I didn't vote for the experience.........
Wait a minute...Cream was your #2? Really? Some people are saying Zep isn't "hard" rock (but they were at the time, really, so I can buy it) but Cream wasn't...and they were active what, two years? Of course I have never thought they were as good as they should have been so perhaps I am overly biased. Sabbath would be #2 for me on this list and they were definitely the hardest - basically metal. Jimi wasn't hard so I don't count him, either.
Cream was very hard rock; they along with Hendrix and The First Jeff Beck Group helped pave the way to heavy metal (as did Zeppelin and Sabbath). It's true that Cream had a short shelf life (thanks to the massive egos of Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce), but they were massively influential. The problem with this poll is that there is a difference between heavy metal and hard rock - I know some will disagree with me on that, but it is true.
See, I think Cream helped pave the way for hard rock, not metal. Sabbath paved the way for metal. It is not just about guitar distortion for me. Jimi? Jimi was psychedelic blues rock, man. I don't see anyone not realizing that there is a difference between hard rock and metal. Your band selection is just a little odd for people, I guess.
BLUE OYSTER CULT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!! COWBELLS!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyways. from the list, i picked sabbath. imho, zeppelin is overrated. i'm a big fan of all the bands listed actually. i have multiple albums (close to all) for all of these bands. i struggled between sabbath and ac/dc.
Maybe you're right; I got my choices mainly from vh-1's list on this subject: 1) Led Zeppelin 2) Black Sabbath 3) Jimi Hendrix 4) AC/DC 5) Metallica 6) Nirvana 7) Van Halen 8) The Who 9) Guns N' Roses 10) KISS 11) Aerosmith 12) Sex Pistols 13) Queen 14) Soundgarden 15) Pink Floyd 16) Cream 17) Ramones 18) Ozzy Osbourne 19) The Clash 20) Alice Cooper 21) Pearl Jam 22) Deep Purple 23) Judas Priest 24) Iron Maiden 25) Cheap Trick 26) Motorhead 27) Iggy Pop 28) Rush 29) Mötley Crüe 30) Red Hot Chili Peppers 31) Def Leppard 32) The Doors 33) Rage Against The Machine 34) Alice in Chains 35) Jane's Addiction 36) Frank Zappa 37) Yardbirds 38) MC5 39) Neil Young & Crazy Horse 40) Stone Temple Pilots 41) Ted Nugent 42) The Kinks 43) Nine Inch Nails 44) ZZ Top 45) Pantera 46) Scorpions 47) The Rollins Band 48) Janis Joplin 49) Smashing Pumpkins 50) Slayer 51) Thin Lizzy 52) Faith No More 53) Korn 54) Sonic Youth 55) Blue Oyster Cult 56) White Zombie 57) Heart 58) Anthrax 59) Bad Company 60) New York Dolls 61) Jethro Tull 62) Ministry 63) Boston 64) Steppenwolf 65) The Cult 66) Joan Jett & The Blackhearts 67) Rolling Stones 68) Husker Du 69) Megadeth 70) Living Colour 71) Lynyrd Skynyrd 72) Foo Fighters 73) Twisted Sister 74) Pat Benatar 75) Spinal Tap 76) Bon Jovi 77) Hole 78) Marilyn Manson 79) Ratt 80) Green Day 81) Pixies 82) Queensryche 83) King's X 84) UFO 85) Whitesnake 86) Foreigner 87) King Crimson 88) Tool 89) Lita Ford 90) Rainbow 91) Danzig 92) The Black Crowes 93) Lenny Kravitz 94) Yes 95) Fugazi 96) Meat Loaf 97) Primus 98) Mountain 99) Bad Brains 100) Quiet Riot http://www.rockonthenet.com/archive/2000/vh1hardrock.htm As you can see, a very diverse list. I didn't think their list was that bad but I do think that Rainbow should have been higher than 90 and that the first Jeff Beck Group (the one that did "Truth" and "Beck-Ola") should have made this list.
