Been listening to over the weekend, quite a few classic hard rock bands in Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Got me wondering - who people feel is the greatest hard rock band of all-time?

    Led Zeppelin
    Black Sabbath
    Deep Purple
    AC/DC (the Fatty FatBastard choice :p )
    Jimi Hendrix Experience
    Cream (my personal favorite)

I gotta go with Zeppelin over Cream (although I like all of these bands, yes Fatty, even AC/DC) mainly because Zeppelin was together a lot longer than Cream and their influence was much more felt.

sabbath (with both ozzy and dio) gets my vote. i don't consider zeppelin, deep purple, hendrix, or cream as hard rock, and sabbath is better than ac/dc.

though i would say zeppelin was a better band.

I really like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC but I'm going to have to go with Limp Bizkit.

Sabbath was harder than anything else at the time.

Zepplin was a better band of musicians but as for "Hard Rock" I'd give the edge to Sabbath.

Should have added GnR to the poll to have at least one 80s band to compete with all of those 70s bands.

I voted for Styx, though, since their hardest is certainly underrated.

if we're talking "hard" rock...I'd have to say Black Sabbath....I like some of Zepplin's stuff like "When The Levees Break", but the overall "dark" feel of Black Sabbath does it for me, plus I love Ozzie's voice.............I love Jimi, but I don't really consider him "hard" rock so that's why I didn't vote for the experience.........

Wait a minute...Cream was your #2? Really? Some people are saying Zep isn't "hard" rock (but they were at the time, really, so I can buy it) but Cream wasn't...and they were active what, two years? Of course I have never thought they were as good as they should have been so perhaps I am overly biased.

Sabbath would be #2 for me on this list and they were definitely the hardest - basically metal. Jimi wasn't hard so I don't count him, either.

Cream was very hard rock; they along with Hendrix and The First Jeff Beck Group helped pave the way to heavy metal (as did Zeppelin and Sabbath). It's true that Cream had a short shelf life (thanks to the massive egos of Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce), but they were massively influential.

The problem with this poll is that there is a difference between heavy metal and hard rock - I know some will disagree with me on that, but it is true.

See, I think Cream helped pave the way for hard rock, not metal. Sabbath paved the way for metal. It is not just about guitar distortion for me. Jimi? Jimi was psychedelic blues rock, man.

I don't see anyone not realizing that there is a difference between hard rock and metal. Your band selection is just a little odd for people, I guess.

As you can see, a very diverse list. I didn't think their list was that bad but I do think that Rainbow should have been higher than 90 and that the first Jeff Beck Group (the one that did "Truth" and "Beck-Ola") should have made this list.
