Roy was wide open when he hit that shot. If you look at what happened, one lazy defensively guy was just watching him and let him take that wide open trey.
From the limited replays they showed right after the shot, it looked like T-Mac initially guarded him and when he broke away to go get the inbound pass beyond the arc T-Mac pointed to him as if he was expecting someone to switch off and pick him up. Ron tried to switch off his man and Yao probably didn't even see him. By the time T-Mac noticed no one was switching off to guard Roy, it was too late and he made a mild attempt to jump at him. I'm not sure if the defensive play was designed to switch off on any player moving towards the ball but it's all too late now.
1.) He's like 28 feet out. 2.) If you try to block the shot he's going to flail his arms and fall down and scream bloody murder. 3.) There is no way in hell he should be allowed to catch and do anything other than immediately shoot. I think the home cooking on the game clock was the culprit here. Even if you say the Rockets had no business winning the game the way they got manhandled time after time on the glass, It isn't fair for a player to hit the go-ahead shot with 1.9 seconds left, have our player hit the go-ahead shot in somehow only 1 second ticks off the clock, giving their player enough time to catch, get his feet nice and set and knock down a ridiculous shot from that far away. Mostly sour grapes, because what can you really say when he makes that shot other than **** me sideways.
T-Mac was supposed to guard him. Had it been Battier or Ron or Chuck or just about anyone else, they would've been on him like glue the whole time, the way Ron stripped the ball from earlier last-second shot.
It looked like a mis-communication. Watching it a few times it seems that Artest was supposed to switch onto Roy. In those situations the defense usually switches on everything.
It looked like artest was meant to set a screen or that was the play. but tmac was also very slow off the mark.
I saw our BIG3 crowed there when Roy get the target! i'm not suppose to say it's any individual's fault
You switch on picks...you don't switch when a man runs by you, that wouldn't work. Tmac should have gone out to guard Roy...he was not picked. Tmac's offense has been fine this year, but his defensive effort has been crap. First he let's Ray Allen run nuts on him, now he leaves Roy wide open for a game winner. If Tmac wants to shake the label of talented loser, he needs to commit to both ends of the floor. DD
Tmac defence him,and artest make up against,Adelamn seems made a atrategy fault. He shall let Artest guard Roy all the way
Miscommunication, and if that's the case, we really need to work on it because it's not worth costing us the game. Roy should have never even been able to get that ball.
The only way it is miscommunication is if they are playing zone, and if they were, then they get beat by that shot anyway. DD
On 610 sports radio this morning, adam wexler was on. He had asked the team on what happenned that play and here was what was supposed to have happenned: The rockets wanted artest to be on roy. They were expecting the blazers to draw up an inbounds play which forced the rockets to switch. So basically, tmac and artest were setup to switch immediately so that artest would wind up on roy. However, such inbounds play did not happen. Instead, Roy went straight back to receive the ball with no picks. Because of this, there was hesitation for a split second: artest thought mcgrady would continue on roy, and mcgrady though artest would switch to roy. That split second was all that roy needed as both mcgrady and artest recovered too late as they both jumped at roy's shot. My personal thoughts align with what kenny and charles was saying on the tnt show. basically it was setup bad to begin with. yao should not have been guarding the inbounder. the only reason to have someone guard the inbounder is to protect that person coming back in for a return pass and final shot. however, with .8, there is no time for such a return pass. it would have been better with a smaller quicker guy in (rather than yao) and have the 5 guys guard the 4 blazers that might receive the pass.
Have you ever played organized ball on any level? You do switch, even when a pick isn't being ran... The defense was switching around all night long. What Rockets team have you been watching the past 8 years?
Even if you put your palm on roy's eyes, he should still hit the unbelievable three because the God was helping him. But for his blessing, no way should roy hit that.
I still play orgnanized ball at the age of 44....and there was no switch unless there was a pick. You don't just switch and switch and switch unless there is a pick...that is when the switches happen unless you are running a zone. Read the article at Chron.com.....they were anticipating a pick and were going to switch it...there was no pick...Tmac should have followed him out..... DD
Dude, all night long the Rockets were switching while in man to man, with no picks being set. that is why Ron Ron got killed by cross overs like 5 times last night because he switched onto the faster guards without them even setting picks.
They switch when the other guy comes to set a pick or if they are responsible for a zone.... Neither happened last night and Tmac got burned. DD
