Ok, a few years ago I downloaded a bunch of Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes off of Soulseek, each in WMV format. All of them played nicely and were deleted nicely, save for one episode. For two years, I have been unable to delete this one episode, while the computer tells me that another person/computer/program may be using the file.

Nobody is. This file (180k kb, I want to delete it) has been stuck on two different computers -- my old computer, and my current laptop of 18 months -- because I forgot about the file when I was transferring files from computer to computer.

Every time I right click on the file to look at properties, it sends my CPU usage up to 99 (PC, Win XP, a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop) and I have to restart. My Windows Media Player isn't being used. Nothing's being used, I'm not on a network, I still can't delete it. No peer 2 peer clients exist on the computer now, there's no way I have a virus or have any outside computer using my computer. It's just this one file, causing havoc. And, the odd thing about it, is it's a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode that otherwise plays well and has no outward weirdness that I can tell.

    The file name is this:

    curb_your_enthusiasm_-_s1e01_-_the_pants_tent_[zr]

In the folder it is listed as a Video Clip and has a WMP icon next to it.

Can anyone help me trash this thing? I'm burning a DVD and need all the room I can, and this thing is a bit of a worry.

I have a Dell laptop and this happens to my alot. I never figured out the trick to fix the problem immediately, but eventually the files seemed to work whatever issue it was having at the time out and them I am able to move or delete the files.

Anyways, not much help but at least you know your problem is shared by another Dell laptop user/ moron!

Try booting your computer up in "Safe Mode", and then deleting the file. I've had that happen to me sometimes. I'm pretty sure that's how I got rid of it.

I think it has to do with the windows preview pane on their folders. Incidentally, if someone could tell me how to disable that preview option, I'd appreciate it. Sometimes it gets stuck and uses up all my resources. Very annoying.

Ok, I'll try that. Actually, I don't get a preview pane with this file, though it does play fine.

Maybe that has something to do with it. It's trying to generate a preview pane but can't for some reason. That's usually how it happens to me. Like when I've downloaded part of a file through bittorrent, and accidentally click on the file and it'll try to do the preview, but just end up taking up all of my resources. It's highly annoying.

Ok, cool, it worked in safe mode. Bye-bye Pants Tent.

I'd love to disable the preview function. That way my girlfriend wouldn't inadvertantly see a still frame of a Tera Patrick video when she highlights the "BasketballResearchDoNotClickNotPornISwear.wmv" file.

Yeah usually when it's not windows related stuff that can't be deleted something is running without you knowing. Safe mode kills all those processes so you can delete it manually. For your "secret" files you can always hide them and not display hidden files. ;)

I've found that I can delete those pesky programs through another program like Winrar or winzip.

Close everything else. Look for the folder with that file through Winrar, and delete from there.

Rename the file to "BasketballResearchDoNotClickNotPornISwear.com", or have you disabled the extensions?

If the preview function you are referring to is the still pic of a video when you open the directory it is in all you have to do is click view to the right of the file and edit menus at the top. Change the view from thumbnail to list or details.

If you want to make that default view for all folders that you open then go to the tools which is a couple to the right from the view menu. Click folder options and then click the view tab. Click apply to all folders and it will set the view setting for the current folder you have open as the default for all folders.

I'm talking about the preview thumbnail on the left side of the folder where it says "details". You can collapse it, but I'm pretty sure it still initiates the preview but just hides it from view.

Rename the extensions too. Like .dll, .sys, .69, .poon....

You don't even have to rename the file back to watch it. Drag and drop into the media player....

There was this blind kid at my junior high school. He got along pretty well for a blind kid - usually with a cane, by himself. People just got out of his way when necessary, and he usually said "thank you" when he noticed. Everyone liked him, or at least pretended they did. I don't know if he hung out with anyone outside of school though.

So, one time I was in the boy's bathroom during 3rd hour and taking a leak, and in he walks. Tap, tap, tap, tapping and a terse echo on the tile. Now, by this time I'm finished pissing, but I'm curious how this is going to work. So I say hello to him, and go to the sink and turn on the faucet to wash my hands, but I'm still watching.

He gets lined up like he's ready to unzip, but he's not really square with the urinal. I think about telling him, but I don't really want him to know he's being observed. At this point, I'm already telling myself that it would be completely inappropriate to laugh. I was in junior high, but even then I had my limits. Don't laugh at the blind kid, no matter what happens, do NOT laugh at the blind kid.

Okay, so he tucks his cane under his arm and unzips. I'm fully expecting to hear the stream hit the tiles on the wall between the two urinals, but suddenly this kid turns and faces me. Then he starts pissing on the floor. I was stunned. His eyes were usually bobbing around like they were floating in his head, turned up and casually staring at the landing gear on his frontal lobe, but while he was pissing on the floor, his eyes rolled down and I swear the creepy ****er was staring right at me while doing this wheezy cartoon dog laugh. Then he zipped up, his eyes floated back to their normal position, and he tap tap tapped out of the bathroom.

I must have stood there, next to the running faucet, for a good ten minutes. The soap dried on my hands.

Sometimes files can be deleted without booting in safe mode by going to the DOS command prompt and deleting the directory with the same name and location as the folder.

And make sure to put it in a folder labeled "golf". I hear people do that.

Okay there is an easy way to get rid of that. Go to folder options and click Use Windows Classic Folders under Tasks on the General Tab. Click apply and that all goes away.
