Granted, this is being stated by Sega and will be for games on the Xbox 2 (or Xbox 360 as the "cool" people call it, and maybe the other two next-gen consoles), but publishers have wanted higher prices for a while, and license exclusivity doesn't help. I certainly don't want next-gen games to start out at $60 and maybe even $70 for some games. Maybe they could get by with this if the games were much more amazing that anyone anticipated, but I didn't think Condemned looked that good enough to warrant a 60 dollar price tag. I'm already finding myself waiting for some games to get around that $20-$30 dollar range before I even consider buying them in today's game market. While I hope this is just early rumors, the PSP game prices may be a sign that publishers want higher prices for sure.
WTF??? On average, making a movie cost more than making a game and games already cost about twice the price of one ticket and a dvd of the movie. I wasn't aware profits were shrinking in the game industry
As long as EB games is selling pre owned games for around half price or better, I'll just keep buying those.
What is the projected retail prices on XBOX2 and PS3? If games are running for $20 more than what they are now I can only imagine what the beginning retail price of each unit will be, sheesh.
Depends. It seems as though there is an unwritten law that ~$300 should be the price considering how well consoles with higher retail prices sold, so I would expect that the PS3 and Xbox2 would hover around that price again, depending on what is included. Also, there could be multiple versions of the consoles. Xbox2 has been rumored to have 3 different versions to pick from, as well as attempting to be a similar to the GC of this gen, price-wise.
Razors and blades, my man, razors and blades. Sell the system cheap, charge a lot for the games once you're locked into your console choice.
Im pretty sure thats what we pay over here in Australia (Once you take exchange rated into account). All it leads to is less games being sold...its as simple as that. Over here you can expect to pay $100 for a new game. I wanted to but the GTA Double Pack for the XBox.....that STILL costs $100!
So now your gonna end up paying around $135 now for new console games? what a ripoff..I say we boycott!
With prices like that, I don't think I will enter the realm of the next generation Console games/systems. I will stick with PC games.
I'd imagine that the PC prices could go up as well (aren't some titles already a little more expensive than console games?). The "excuse" I see EA and others using for increasing prices is that higher budgets will require higher prices. IIRC, the highest budget for a game was ~$40 million and that was Half-Life 2, a PC game. Once PC graphic cards and processors catch up to these newer consoles, PC developers should be spending as much as console developers when it comes to creating next-gen type games. Plus, if there is a match, more-or-less, in quality between a game on the PC and that same game on a console, I would think that publishers wouldn't price the PC game at $40-$50 while the console game is priced at $60-$70. It seems like there have already been some attempts to boycott EA for their crappy games lately, but it hasn't seemed to have affected sales too badly. *Looks at Goldeneye:Rogue Agent sales compared to the sales of games like MGS:3*
That blows . . . just got MVP 2005 for $25, compared to $50 paid for the 2004 version. Just when I thought prices were coming down. The exclusive deal EA got with the NFL puts a wrench into that trend. Guess I'll have to steal Madden from some little kid now.
I don’t understand this, if EA thinks that they were overselling in the past and did not have a surplus of games in supply why wouldn’t they increase the price to offset the demand?? Supply and demand works both ways you don’t only have to have a shortage to make a change in the curve to maximize profits..
I'll just simply stop buying those games. It doesnt effect me to much now because Ive gone off sport games....and I dont own any other EA games. These games are going up in price with every system though. I know with the PSOne a new game use to cost AUS$60. Now the new games for the PS2 cost AUS$100. AUS$130+ is just to much and would make me consider not going into the next gen as well. I have to say when I got Halo 2 and got what I felt was an incomplete game.....it chnaged my view of video games and what Im willing to pay for them. I used to go out and buy only the very best games out there.....if that meant buying two or three good games that came out at once, then so be it. now Im tossing up wether to spend AUS$100 on the GTA Double Pack......or spend that money on Doom3 for the XBox.
